What do you guys mostly use as your substrate?

This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

I usallly use Play sand and I'm trying eco earth as soon as I get my new tank. What do you use? Play sand or eco earth? Both? Something else?

I personally use straight ee. Some use straight sand, straight ee, or a mixture of both.... Ee boosts humidity and keeps sand castle consistency for those that have problems.

If you're looking to use ee, get the bricks. You can usually get 9 bricks (3-3packs of bricks) for same price as 1 24 qt bag of loose ee....

3 bricks is equal to same amount of sub for 1 24 qt bag loose ee

I use 5:1 ratio of playsand to EE. My crabs seem to like it and I've had no problems with the substrate drying out.

I use mostly ee with some mixed in. Then i put a layer of sand on top that has for the most part been mixed with the ee do to crab digging.

Sand on one side - with a bit of gravel mixed in.... and EE and sand mix on the other... Worked well for me so far, some crabs prefer the EE others like the sand.

Mine is just about a 50/50 mix of playsand and EE. It was prepared two years, almost to the day, and has retained its sandcastle consistency perfectly! As the guys are always tunneling for fun and all have molted successfully many times, I assume they like the blend.

Also, you can check the bird section at your petstore for a box of crushed oyster shells, and sprinkle a little into or on top of the mix for the added calcium. I got a box that I won't see the bottom of for a very long time, for only $2.50.
