Umm, that depends... Are you talking about a heater or trying lights??

Very true. It does depend on if you are looking for lights or UTH (under tank heater). I personally recommend UTHs. Imho those do a better job at not zapping the humidity in the air. Humidity is important because hermits have modified gills and need humidity to breathe. Depending on where you live, You might want to get the longest UTH for your tank. The following website has them for the cheapest: http://www.reptilebasics.com The temperature and the humidity need to stay above 80. :)

You question isn't really answerable without some parameters. The ambient room temperature factors greatly into the equation. Are you trying to heat a tank that's in a room kept at 65 degrees or in a room kept at 75 degrees? Do you live in a warm climate or a cold climate? What interior tank temperature are you shooting for?

My room is typically 70 degrees. I live in Ohio so its so-so. Hoping to have 80 degrees in the tank but I can always do 75 and spray more often. I also have EE and moss to help the temperature be ok

For me, a 20-30 watt worked great, but like others have already mentioned it depends on the tank! :)

Since you are in Ohio, go with the highest wattage that will fit on the tank. You can always get a thermostat to turn the heat down, but you can only go as high as the wattage will allow without adding an extra form of heat.

Thanks for all the replies and answers. Sorry, I thought there was an exact science to go with how many watts are needed lol. I ended up getting 12 watts (11x11 inch)

Apologies if I'm just over-tired & reading this incorrectly, but I wanted to be sure the difference between temperature (measured in degrees & raised by your heat mat) and humidity (the moisture in the air, measured as a percentage - %) were totally clear. :)

Having your heat at 75 degrees won't necessarily mean your humidity is lower, and that you need to spray the tank more often.

The EE & moss help keep the humidity up, but don't do anything much for the temperature.

You want both at 80 (percent and degrees respectively) but you might (if the air in your room is dry) need to mist more often once your heat is higher, to maintain the 80% humidity. I find that I have to mist more at higher temperatures.

(Sorry if you didn't need that explained! I should probably sleep before I look at forums, not after.)
