Accurite--Boo!

Post by mool » Sun Jan 15, 2017 12:06 pm

My 3rd set of Accurite gauges this year just failed. Oddly both failed on the same day. It's time for me to find a different way to keep track of my heat and humidity as Accurite isn't cutting it for me.

Paying more is not a problem as long as they work. Does anyone have a brand of gauges other than Accurite that have stood the test of time--or at least lasted longer than 3 months?

That's interesting. They have a one year warranty. Where do you place yours? I hope I don't have an issue!

They are lasting about 2-3 months.

The first set (one for each tank) were stuck on the the back of the tank facing forward about 6" above the substrate.

The second set was put in the same place using the residual hook and loop fasteners.

I put the third set on paint stir sticks and moved them around the tank. They occasionally fell onto the substrate but never in or near the water.

The first two sets I bought at Home Depot. The 3rd set; at Lowes. Each set had slightly different features in the housing. All were inaccurate on the humidity (using the salt calibration method).

I'm not going to bother returning them for a refund. I don't have the receipts and they are probably used incorrectly. They are meant to be used indoor/outdoors; not in tanks.

I bought one at Walmart (because I dared to venture in there! LOL), and one from Amazon. They both look the same. I started out having mine on the sub, but the crabs kept knocking it over and filling the back with sub. I got tired of that and command striped it to the top of the tank. Both of mine were accurate with the calibration. You seem to have gotten a bad batch. Thats unfortunate. :?

Interesting. I've had them with red, black, blue and green secondary colors. The main unit was white plastic on all of them, but they all had a secondary color as well. They had various features on the back as well. Some had stands like picture frames to stand them up; some had holes for hanging on a nail, some had magnetic strips in addition to the other hanging method; etc. Each was a bit different; but all were the same brand and all failed quickly.

The one in my 40B is currently reading that it is -2 degrees in there with a permanent 99% humidity. Ummm; wrong! The one in my 55 only shows the top half of the numbers for both heat and humidity; but it's still reading accurately, I think. I have to guess what the bottom half of the numbers say.

I'm sorry...your post made me laugh!!! Yeah, I'd say that yours is reading wrong at a -2!! Then, your comment about it still reading accurately, you think - you are funny! Anyway...Mine doesn't have secondary colors. Just black. It does have a magnetic strip on the back, and can stand up on its own. I'm going on the end of the 5th month with mine and no issues, but that isn't very long.
This is what mine looks like:

I'm glad my humor came through!

When I got home yesterday, it was -7. I don't have a tank, I have a deep freezer....

I second this, plus I greatly enjoy not having the digital display in the tank. From what I've heard from others as long as the probe doesn't get submerged in water (they said afterward it eternally read 99% humidity) you should be fine.

Dude, that's great! You can store ice cream in there!
Maybe take the crabs out first though... I bet they'd eat it all when you weren't looking.

Edit - now I'm imagining crabs in little fur lined parkas, with tiny little skis.

How and where do you mount the probe? I want to get a combo un it like that, but I am a little unclear on the logistics of how to get the most accurate reading from it.

I hang it in the middle of my tank and the probe hangs at crab level. I have a hinged glass versatop and the wire hangs between the hinge of the top and the frame of the tank.

Crabs in snow-bunny outfits... That's a visual.

Incidentally, a friend of mine went to the Galapagos islands to photograph birds and it was unseasonably cold--in the 30's. She took a picture of an Ecuadorian scurrying across the beach in near freezing weather.
