How much Eco Earth will I need

Post by Emm33333 » Wed Jan 18, 2017 7:54 am

I looking to get a 40g in the next 3 months (I would get one now but I don't have enough money lol) and I'm hoping to have at least 8" of Eco Earth. So my question, is if I want 8" of Eco earth and I'm getting the 3 brick packs, how many packs should I or would I need to fill the 40g tank? A bit of extra info: I used 3 bricks and it only came up to 5" in half of my 29g. Please respond, thanks

I would start with three or four of the 3 brick packs.

I have a 40B! 6 single bricks gave me 8 inches to start with. It settled to about 6.5 after a month or so. I need to top it off but this is my ISO tank and don't use it that often.

Edit - I set it up 4 months ago and it's still at 6.5 inches

I too have a 40B, but I have about 6-7 bricks of EE along with about 250lbs of sand. My depth was 12" but it has settled a lot.

Unfortunately I've had multiple molters down 100% of the time the tank has been set up. I want to dig around to aerate the sub and then mix in some more, but I can't.

I have a food mite infestation and plan to get rid of all my sub tomorrow and an going to switch to only ee. My question is this, with the mix of sand and ee the top layer has dry ee that you can tell is definitely dry. So with just ee does this happen? The top dry out? Will I need to mist more often?

Honestly, I think that has more to do with your crabitat conditions because you were having that with just your sand too...right? You probably just notice it quicker because of the color difference with the ee. Don't get rid of all of your sub. Just scoop out around where you keep your food bowls. IMHO, that is really all you need to do. Change food daily, and if you see mites, scoop dirt around it.
