How to add a moss pit?

Post by NLindsey921 » Thu Feb 02, 2017 3:03 pm

Sorry for the glares and reflections but here are some pics of my tank. It is 29 gallons with about 8 inches of substrate. I have six crabs 2 es and 4 pps. I am trying to add a moss pit into the tank but I cannot figure out how to do it without taking anything out and I'd rather not do that. I'm posting to see if any of you guys might have an idea on what to do.

Here's another caddy (same kind) in a different tank

So beautiful. However I don't think a corner caddy would work too well. I have stuff in all my corners already. And I already know suction cups won't work.

I've always had problems with suction cups but the ones that come with these work perfectly. I've been using these caddies for 6 mths and have yet to fall. When I rearrange, I actually have to pry them off the glass.

Could you do a container of some sort on the sub? Or a cave out of a mason jar?

I have an old pickle jar that I am using as a cave. Right now I just have a little eco earth in it but I could clean it and use it as a moss pit but it's not very big. Should I fill it completely with moss or only put a thin layer.

Could you place it above this cholla/vines and use these things for access?

I have a fake wood plank right there. You can't really see it in the picture but it goes from there up to the very top of the other side. Image
Here is a better picture taken from inside the tank where you can see most of it. I moved the cholla and vines a little to take the pic and that is rose sitting up top.

Image hanging coconut half moss pit, I bought a coconut and cracked it myself, drilled some holes and tied jute cord to it and hung it, using a command hook outside the tankImageI have mine sitting on top of a lizard hammock now, but it was in the back corner by the uth above cholla wood. You could do this.Imageyou could hang it anywhere in the tank, I have a hook on the glass lid inside to hang things down from as well. I also put a coconut half on top of the sub and put moss in it. You could put it in front of the water pools

Yeah definitely couldn't see plank there. It see it now tho lol. As for the cave, I would only put a little bit of moss in it just to see how it goes. (I wouldn't want them cramped) Then add more if needed. Other than the cave, I'm out of suggestions. Hopefully someone else will chime in :)

I like the coconut idea. I could probably even hang it from the front. And I could do the jar one as well. We get coconuts all the time. Thanks guys.

I got a rectangular narrow looking shower caddy that we have used as a shell shack and also moss pit in the past. We have also used a Tupperware - I just cut some little holes along the side for suction cups. We currently have a glass vase going undersub and we use that for our moss pit for the hermies and isopods:) The hanging upside down Coco hut is a great idea and I've also seen some crabbers use a half log going across like a bridge flipped up with moss in there :)

I have 3 shower caddies 1 for moss and 2 for shells. They are not corner caddies, I have found the key is to have some sort of support resting under it. For example, you could put it in with part of it resting on the pickle jar you were talking about. Also if you do decide to add one fill it to the top with moss. My crabs LOVE digging around in it, I really think a moss pit adds hours of fun for crabs.

Those are great ideas! I put my moss on top of my sub. My hermies love it. They dig right down into the dirt and take the moss with them. I replace it often.
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

How often do you have to replace it. I might try that since I do have isopods. They would benefit from that.
