Heat Problems

Post by HeyItsEggs » Fri Feb 03, 2017 6:19 pm

Hello my fellow crab owners!
I have had some issues with keeping my heat up. I have a UTH and a UV heat lamp and most of the time the temp sits at 68-70f! It does occasionally go up to 72-74f but that is very rarely. I do live in Central New York and as you probably know, it is cold! BRRRR! But we keep the heat in the house at 68-70f. So that means the heating sources don't make a difference! Please tell me if there is anyway I can warm it up in there!
Thank you all
Sophia aka "Eggs"

I'm in the Midwest and it's chilly here too; keep the house at 66. I run a UTH on the back of my 29 gallon, with insulation on 2 sides. I also.run a heat lamp 24/7 (red bulb for night). Glass lid on the tank and this keeps things toasty. Actually I sit mid 80s in places, and a bit higher at the top of the tank. Here's a basic pic of my setup. You do have to be very careful with the humidity and watch this set up come spring, as it will get too hot.

I agree, glass lids, no gaps. Insulation around tank. If you have zoo med heaters you cannot insulate over the top of them, you have to go around them. You can use styrofoam, cardboard, aluminum foil or Reflectix. I personally use Reflectix. Some crabbers insulate all sides of their tanks during the winter. Consider putting a blanket over it too. You have to do what you have to do to get it warm!

Uth brands like ultratherm can be insulated over the top of them.

There are mylar emergency blankets for sale on Walmart's website: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Coghlans-1.5 ... WvYbG984L0

Lamps are good, but you have to then watch humidity which is important for the hermits to breathe with their modified gills.

Good luck! :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com
