A fellow crabber with problems

Post by Emm33333 » Mon Feb 06, 2017 9:53 am

Someone in my class has hermit crabs and I'm concerned about overcrowding. Here is the info I have,
5 crabs 10g
7-8 inches of sand
Lamp and heating pad
Sand wet
she has had them for 1y

I told her about the 5 gallons per crab rule and recommend she get a larger tank. What else should I do? Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated!

Definitely a bigger tank. If that's not an option for her then I would recommend that she re-home a few.... Also depends on how big these crabs are. If they're teenies, (highly unlikely if she's had them for a year) she'll be okay until they get to smalls IMO. If they're bigger say jumbos, then a minimum of 75 gal tank is required IMO.

Ask her to join or check out this site. All of us here would be willing to help her.

She said some of them are small (2? Idk) but the rest pong pong size from how she showed me their size. Both, she and I live in Ohio. I know a few other crabbers that live in Ohio, I believe Pinchersandshells has a 37 with ?? Number of crabs. I believe Pinchers is adopting 3 this coming weekend cause I am adopting 6 through the same lady. With my two other crabs I'd have a total of 8. I suppose I could possibly take 3/2 of hers but I don't want my 75 to be crowded. I have one class with her and it's already passed. I did mention that I'm going to have a larger tank soon, I tried to hint her in. I'll keep this form updated so check back soon.

If she can't swing a new tank she can also see about a tote. Only other option would be if you had space taking one or two while she did an up grade. Only if you are able. Dont hurt your crabs to help others.

Good point. I could always keep them in my ISO so I know who is who. I'll talk to her tomorrow. Hopefully she won't be tense.

Id just say "hay if you want i have a spare iso tank i can keep some of your hermits in till you get a larger tank or you can borrow it [only if you are comfortable with that again dont hurt your hermits for anothers]. Your more than welcome to say no, if youd like anything done im sure i can do that for you and you can have them back whenever you want. So on. That way she feels comfortable and not like your taking her crabs.

Okay, how did the conversation go? Was it tense? Was she defensive? I know we all can get a little spiral eyed over our crabbies. You don't want to push her away. Try to see things from her point of view. She might not know any better. You want her to be open minded to changing for the better. . Let her know you aren't being judgmental, and that you want to help her. Maybe that would be a way....Then, you could check out Craigslist, letgo, OfferUp, bookoo to find used tanks. If it were me, I would find a tank that is reasonably priced, and say something like, hey I was checking out Craigslist and saw this ad, would you be interested in this deal? Pace yourself. Pinch yourself if you have to. Definitely direct her to the HCA website

Sorry, I wasn't being clear! I have my first class of the day with her and today I just found out this info. I will be sure to ask her tomorrow. That's a good idea to check those websites and say that. She said that she is sometimes on HCA but I'll direct her to visit it more often. I'll tell you what happens after it does tomorrow

Yeah as the other crabbers said if the crabs are most likely overcrowded depending on size. Personally I just think a 10 gal is too small for any number of crabs. I think they should be able to roam a little more.

agreed, that's why I got my 20 gal long, it's definitely too small to roam unless they're tiiiiiny

Depending on which guidelines you follow you should be able to fit them in your 75 gallon. If you follow the 5 gal per crab rule and not take into consideration size, you could technically fit 15 crabs in there. I'm going to become at the max for that rule after adopting the 3 crabs this weekend, since based off of that rule I should only have about 7 and I currently have 4. However, I can become a temporary foster home for crabs until they can go to a forever home. I'm pretty sure I'm fostering some soon, and they will be living in a plastic tote crabitat.
