Floor vs Climbing Space

So I'm looking to finally upgrade my 10 gallon tank, since my small hermies are slowly but steadily growing into medium hermies :D And I just have a quick question: when looking to upgrade for PPs, should I focus more on the width or height?

Molting space is the most important thing as they get larger. Most long tanks have the same base as the next step up. (ie. A 20 long has the same base as a 29) so unless it's a matter of using whatever you can find used, you'll have lots of options as far as space going upwards and outwards.

Totally agree with wodesorel! You can always add a topper in the future to add height as well

Alright so I'll get a 20 long then? :)
When I get the upgrade, how do I turn my current 10 gallon into a topper?

I just upgraded from two 10 gallons to one 29 gallon. I was going to get a 20 Long but then I realized a 20 Long is a 10 gallon with extra width. Which is good and all but it's the same height as a 10 gal so you can only make your sub so deep before there's no room for climbing. That's why I went with a 29 gallon because it's 6" taller than the 20 Long. This way I can have more sub without sacrificing climbing space. Like GB said you can always add a topper but I know me and it was just easier to buy a taller tank right off the bat (it also helps that I got mine for $20 off craigslist)

Either way your crab babies will love the extra room!

If you can fit a 20 long, I'd recommend just going with the 29. It fits the same lid, but will give you more vertical space for sub and decorating. If you get one at Petcos $1 a gallon sale it would only be 9 bucks more. :)

the sale is over though right? :( and i don't think i can afford a 29 right now because of a lot of things happening so the 20 would have to do. i tried looking on craigslist but there weren't any :/ so i'm fairly certain i'm getting a 20 long now. how do i add a topper? ^^;

He just got home this evening and told me it started this weekend.

I've never done topper myself because it's too difficult for daily care (bad back and nerve damage in my hands) but I know others here rave about them!

Topper- you can flip a tank upside down or you can smash the bottom out for easier access. Then secure it using duck tape to the main/base tank... I too would try and get a 29G. It's same foot/floor print just taller.

Wait seriously? That's all a topper is?

Some people go more hardcore and use a front opening terrarium and then the aquarium underneath is just molting space. That's a lot easier for daily maintenance, rather than having to lift off an entire tank every time or reach down an armlength to get to the bowls.

True but an openfront terrarium cost a lot more and they're not included in a petco's $/gal sale... Used ones are sometimes hard to come by too. I just learned to make my topper part jungle like with deeper sub on this end and the food/water dishes on lower side (non-topper side)
