How many PP in a 20 gallon tank?

Post by briannashermitcrabs » Wed Aug 30, 2017 10:53 pm

Hey guys, I'm a (sort of) new crab owner, but I have done tons of research and try to provide a wonderful, healthy, home for my 3 crabs. Right now I have a 10 gallon tank. The crabs are probably small to medium small in size but I want them to have plenty of room and plants, moss, climbing activities, etc. I have 3 purple pinchers at the moment but I am just wondering when I upgrade to the 20 gallon what is the best number of crabs to keep in it? Would I be able to get 1-2 more or is it best to keep only 3? Like I said they are small at the moment but I know they will grow haha. All opinions are welcome. TIA. ❤

The more you have, the quicker they will outgrow the tank as a group. As a max, most people tend to stop around five since many like the 5g per crab rule, but some have 5 due to having smaller crabs. Id personally stick with 3.

Yep, if the 20 is where you'll need to stop for a while, then 2 to 3 would be your best bet. They'll grow father than you think, and overcrowding is their biggest survival issue!

If this is just one of many planned upgrades then you can certainly get a few more since they're smaller! Just be prepared for needing a larger tank (like a 40 breeder) in a couple of years.

I had 4 in my 20L. 2 small 2 medium-ish they seem happy but they weren't in there long. Maybe a few months before I upgraded because I found a really good deal on my 50gal but I think they would have done fine space wise till they out grew it.
