More than likely it is something that your crabs buried that is growing roots
Either way, nothing to be concerned about.

Does the grapewood have roots sprouting from it? (I doubt it, since its meant to be dead.)

By grapewood, do you literally mean like grapevine .... wood? I know that seems like a rediculas question. On an abandoned yard nextdoor, is a dead small grapevine, but close to the ground on both sides is thicker peices. So, is that considered grapewood?
