Help with ultratherm uth--sizing before ordering

Post by Alfielou » Mon Jan 01, 2018 10:54 am

Hi all. We have our new tank set up--very similar situation to the thread of "new tank--some questions," only I did not start with a kit. I have the Zoomed 10-20 gallon uth on a 10 gallon. Humidity is consistently at 99%, but haven't vented yet, as we are trying to get temps up. It's -13 out, so very hard right now, and can only get it to 62-63 overnight. Planning on ordering am ultratherm today to replace the zoomed so that we can insulate it. Which size would you all recommend for our 10 gallon tank? Thanks in advance

What size ultratherm would you recommend for a 90 gallon?

I use an 11x11 Flukers on my 10 gallon that I keep in the bedroom. I like it cool in here for sleeping (between 58 and 68 year round) and it does a great job keeping the temp right around 80. I have cardboard with aluminium foil on the back (behind the UTH) and the top to insulate it a bit.

Is your room really that cold? If it isn't, the there is a draft where the tank is and relocating it someplace warmer like an inside wall or interior room will help a lot! And in a pinch you can cover the tank with a blanket to trap heat for now until you get a new UTH.

Edited to add: Temps below 68 are deadly. As low as you have can kill them quickly. Please use emergency measures to get them warmer! They cannot wait however many days it takes to get a UTH.

Hi. Thank you for the reply. I do not have crabs in there yet. I told my son that we would notion get them until the tank was stable humidity and temp for a solid week. The tank, with an 8 watt heater on it, was 61 at night when we turn our upstairs heat zone higher , and 58 during the day when we lower that zone. But "lower" is still in the 60's. Tank IS on an inside wall away from windows. It does happen to be a corner room that has two outside walls to it, but again, tank is on the interior. I am looking at the ultratherm 11x17, 22 watt heater hoping that that will bring it into range, especially if insulated with foam, as suggested elsewhere on this site, but don't worry--no hermies until tank is stable!! It doesn't help that it's about 15 below zero outside!

That size might be enough. UTH can give between 10 and 20 degrees above room temp but we don't know why some setups end up warmer than others. Having one that is the size of the back of the tank will boost it the most and I would recommend insulating it, both sides, and the lid for maximum benefit.
