Updating my Crabitat

Hi! I have 3 pp's in a 20 gal tank. I was doing some research and I realized I do not have enough sand in my tank. I want to update the tank to make it more comfortable for my crabbies. Also my tank is stinky. I am positive that it is buried food as it smells like bad fruits and all my crabbies are alive and well. Now I want to add more sand and do some updates with places for them to hang out. Will it upset them if I sift through the bedding to find the bad food and as well as add more? How can I make this transition as smooth as possible and not stress my crabbies out?

Thanks!

I dont think it would hurt as long as all of your crabs are up. If you was molting I would dig through anything but if they’re just chilling on top then it’d be fine. Mine are constantly dig and filling tunnels so I don’t think they’re too attached to the tunnels they make lol.

Well, you could mix eco-earth with the sand and I would recommend making sure you have right foods in you're the tank and they should be happy try it out :crabblush:

Anytime you change anything they will freak out a bit, but if it is smelling then it needs a good tidy and that will be a good time to add more sand. :) They should settle back in within a few days.

Are you sure the stink isn't because the sand is too wet? When you pick of the sand, you should not be able to squeeze any water from it.

When you add new sand, make sure the sand is mixed with dechlorinated fw or dechlorinated msw to make it sandcastle consistency.

Hermit crab substrate does have an earthy smell IMO :)
