I decided to start up my 29gl tank back up after not having crabs for about 2 years. So, im cleaning out the tank and start fresh with it. I notice how really dry my old EE was. I have the feeling it was cause how dry it is in my room where i keep the tank. What other kind of substrate would bring up humidity in the tank besides EE?? Or what can else can i add with EE?? I was thinking about putting sand in it too.

Sand and EcoEarth mix is a great substrate to use. But, make sure it is Play Sand or All purpose sand, not "calci" or "hermit crab" sand. You can add moss and safe live plants and if you're using a screen lid, cover it with saran wrap. Misting daily and leaving around a few bowls of dechlorinated water throughout the tank can help as well. When you add sand with the EE, make sure it is sandcastle consistency, not soppy wet.GRMU99 wrote:I decided to start up my 29gl tank back up after not having crabs for about 2 years. Re: Humidity/new subtrate
You can also use bubblers to increase humidity.
One or hopefully two Clypeatus
Goodbye my little E. See you soon.
Bye Fred. You lasted almost 4 years with me. Hope you're with my E now! See you soon Reeba as well. I can't believe I lost you only after a month.

All great advice, just be careful to not over mist because that is how I ended with my last flood. Not saying to NEVER mist, but try to do so sparingly. Something I did that seemed to help when I had humidity issues was I started running a humidifier in my actual house. They are inexpensive at walmart, and it boosted my tank humidity a bit by running it near the tank. But as awesome hermit said, airstones hooked up to a small aquarium pump is a rather inexpensive way to build lots of humidity in the tank. Also, check your hygrometer is working correctly, chances are if it doesn't raise at least a degree or two when you mist it's not functioning correctly. Has it been calibrated lately? Also, where is your heat mat positioned? At times they can dry the top layer of sub out if they overlap. Be warned though, while 5:1 with sand and coco fiber is the recommended mix, sand does not hold water at all, so it will not help with your moisture issues. Only keeping high humidity will. I hope this helps!
