HCA: Hermit Crab Association

I’m curious. If I have an Ultratherm UTH across the back of my tank and then put a cork tile (bark) background over it on the inside, will that prevent the heat (or most of it) from getting inside the tank? Is cork an insulator?

I’d love to make this background but will not if it’ll block the heat entry.

Following up with this, I just stumbled upon this. So, maybe it's not so good in the back of tthe tank over my UTH, but inside on the sides might be good to keep some heat in there.

I would think it would insulated and hold heat out as well. My "haunted house" for the Halloween tank was made out of that type of cork. It was pretty thick, maybe a 1/2" or so. The back surface is made of cork similar to to a bulletin board with the rough natural bark on one side.

Xenocrabs second level and ramps up to it were made out of leftover pieces from that house. Two of the Fluker tension rods worked great for that. Just drill a few holes in the cork to secure the ladders, and the cork to the tension rods and your all set.

You could also add the background to the side of the tank instead. Maybe even cut it in half and glue the smooth sides together and make a two-sided climbing wall for the middle of your tank.

For the rear of my tank I just add fish net with plastic vines ziptied to it. It's better than looking at a bare Ultratherm!

You still have a bunch of options.

Too many options! It's so fun. I have my 55 sitting on the floor with a bunch of stuff I've been buying here and there for when I transfer them over this Spring. I go over there every night, move things around and think about the setup. (I feel comfortable saying this here because I know you all are just as passionate about your crabs).

I do love the idea of the 2-sided climbing wall!

Without realizing it, it was pointed out to me that I change/rearrange my tank almost weekly! I make all kinds of climbing things! They like Terra Cotta pots too! I use tank silicone, fish net from Naples and shells.
