HCA: Hermit Crab Association

So I walk past my tank just now and I see this! I thought it was growing from the driftwood, but it was under it in the EE. Is this bad? I pulled it BTW.

Naw, it's fine. Did you give them seeds or anything with seeds? It's just that plant germinating. Surprised your hermit crabs didn't garden it themselves, they love to shred plants.

Nothing with seeds. And I’m not surprised they haven’t messed with anything because since I put a crap ton of EE in my tank, I haven’t seen my crabs at all.

What did you do to prep it for the tank? We live on Puget Sound and I’ve been wanting to collect from the beach but unsure of safety

I soaked it in a bucket of salt water made with kosher salt for a day or so. Then I baked it in the oven at 200 degrees until it was visibly dry. Making sure to flip it over so the bottom could dry as well. Maybe I didn’t let it dry out enough and that’s why this grew? I’m not sure. I just did what people had done in here.
