A 40L is a much less desirable footprint than a 40 breeder. It doesn't allow for much substrate or decor. It's 48x12x16 vs 36x18x16. I wouldn't put anything that will soon be large or jumbo and there is hardly enough room to move around.

i did my best to get a 40 breeder. I'm still in middle school and don't have a job so i had to buy off of facebook marketplace. The person i was going to buy the breeder from stopped responding and sold it to someone else. So i got the 40L.
I got it back in january and was trying to get my hermie in it as soon as possible but right when it was ready my hermit crab went under and molted. I did not know i was going to have all of that extra time to find one and get it ready. the longest i'll have him in this tank is about three years and then my next goal is to save up and get a very large custom build and make it as natural as possible.
He is still quite small. And when i get friends for him they will also be small. I'm hoping it will be good enough for now.

I understand. If I were you, I would only get a couple of smaller friends (no more than 3) as they will molt and grow.
Your tank is plenty "good enough" if you don't go overboard and buy a bunch of crabs!
Take care and good luck on your crabby adventure!
