Adding substrate

Hi!
I wanted to add substrate and rearrange my crabitat… I haven’t seen one of my Caribbean’s in a while, which means he might be molting.. However, I would be doing this during the day either way. So, is it safe for me to add substrate if the crabs are under? I don’t want to disrupt any tunnels and can’t find a good time to do this. Thanks.
PS, so appreciative for the ability to reach so many hermie owners and receive help. They deserve it!

Hi there!

If you have crabs under, the usually rule is that you can add 1" of substrate on top per day. Don't pack it down, and just go around any decor that may be embedded in the substrate.

You can add as much as you need all at once, no need to spread it out over days, but do it slowly and don't drop or pack it in case there are tunnels close to the surface.

Anything thats buried into the substrate, dont dig it up when rearranging as they may have 'cave' underneath in which it may collapse or be disrupted.
