Dry top sand

My humidity and heat is always in the appropriate range.
I use a 5;1 ratio of play sand to eco earth.

The bottom layer of sand is nice and moist but the top layer is always drying up. I try and spray and mix the top layer though I'm hesitant to get too carried away as I almost collapsed a molting tunnel the other day.

My question is will a molting crab be able to get out okay if the top layer is dried out? I try and keep up with misting and mixing but by the end of the day when I get home it's dry again.

That’s normal for a sand-coconut fiber substrate since the coco fiber releases moisture more readily. In most cases a hermit crab can dig through an inch or so of dry sand without issues.
