good temporary home??

Post by Guest » Thu Apr 30, 2009 2:30 pm

Hi all,

This weekend my friends and I are taking a trip a couple of towns over to do some shopping. We will be in very close proximity to a Petco that carries Strawberries, and I am dying to get a couple to add to my little clan, Icarus needs a species buddy.

My tat is currently at home, which is 3 hours away from my college. I will be home in about a week, so if I were to get the Straws, I would need to house them for about 5 or 6 days.

I dont want to spend a ton of money on something I will only be using for a couple days. What kind of set-up could I use to keep them happy for a few days until I could get them home to my tat next week?

A large rubbermaid container with lid from Wal-Mart makes a good temporary home. When I do deep cleans I use a rather large one to keep my crabs in while I clean their tank. I also put a couple inches of water in there with them so they can bathe themselves.

Just a note, don't store them for a day in the water. That's bad. :) But you could use damp paper towels in there lining the container to keep humidity up. I do that when I shipped Es in the past. I never had a single mortality either

I was thinking of using a tub, but how would I heat it?

Or would they be ok for a few days without heat?

Keep it wrapped in a blanket usually works with microwaved towels between the blanket and the tub for warmth. Just keep an eye on the temp. Also mist frequently for humidity.

Im thinking of getting a large KK or appropriately sized tub and putting a warm damp towel over the top of it to increase humidity and add heat, while also allowing airflow. I can also put a towel around the whole thing to keep in the heat.

Do you think that will hold them over for a few days?

When we have moved, we've used the larger Rubbermaid/Ziploc containers with a small number of holes punched in and filled with our excess/extra moss. Sprayed until it just starts to drip. Keeps the humidity well and gives them some degree of hidey.

We've never kept them in it more than two days, but I usually leave the moss in there a while after we move and when I've gone to pull some out later ( often much ) it's still rather damp. If you're worried, bring a mister bottle and top it off.

I'd also bring a thin towel to keep things dark.

Thanks for the advice. I did end up getting a couple strawberries. They are in a medium sized KK with forest bedding and a small hide (made out of a disposable bowl) and of course food and water. They have a small UTH on one side and I taped plastic over the lid of the KK, leaving some holes for airflow. I just took the lid off to change their food and it seems to be nice and warm and humid in there so I think I'm good to go!

Both babies are dug down and seem pretty comfy.
