so I've been looking at different lid types and I thought I'd get a plexi glass lid but I read on a couple of places that you need to cut holes for the lamps. is that true? If it is, I think I'll be going with a different type of lid.. haha

anyway, Any feedback is appreciated.

When I bought the plexi-glass for my lid, I got the kind that is supposed to stand up to 600*, so I didn't have to cut holes in it. :) I have plexi-glass over a screen lid, which works really well, because the screen lid allows for a little ventilation, while the plexi-glass keeps most of the humidity in. When the humidity gets too high, it's easy to move the plexi-glass a little and let some of it out; I don't actually actually have to open the lid. :)

I use to have a plexi glass lid and I did put holes in it for ventilation but not for the lamps. I clipped them on the side so that there was about 1/2" opening and I drilled holes in the lid as needed till the temp and humidity were just right. I just let the lights shine through the top but I did need hotter bulbs and did have to flip the lid each week as it would bow in the middle but never melt. The lamps I use are from home depot and I just clamped them to the side and had the lights shine through the top and it was great. I stopped using the plexi glass after I got my new tank but I don't like the Styrofoam lid anymore since it is keeping it too humid in there. I am getting a new piece of plexi glass tomorrow finally. I get the plexi for free so I had to wait for it.

As I use UTHs and a "normal" aquarium strip light, I don't have this issue.
