HCA: Hermit Crab Association

I gave my hermit crabs a piece of salmon, they buried it, and then they went under too. Now I'm afraid it'll rot and stink, but I don't want to dig them up.

What does everyone suggest I do in this situation?

Hmm... ick. Do you know where the salmon is? They probably didn't bury it too far down in the sand; try just sifting through the very top layer to see fi you can find it without disturbing them. If you can't find it, you could try putting a bottle or something around the area where the crab is buried and going through the rest of the substrate to find it. Good luck!

That's so cute! ^_^ They'll come up later, go looking for their buried treasure, and wonder why it isn't there anymore.

What a fishy situation!

Yeah, I have no idea where it is. It's not in the top layer of substrate. I think Scrambles took it down under with her. I can see her through the bottom of the tank... but I see no salmon! It doesn't smell yet, so hopefully they'll dig it up for snacks before then. If I catch them all on the surface, then I'll go digging!

they bury food a lot, i find old chinks of stuff covered in sand all the time. :roll: they do it with shells too.
one of them might bring it up for you if they grab it for a snack,and if a molter brought it down for a meal to go she will either eat it all anyway, bring part of it back up, or completely forget about it. worst case scenario, it'll turn up as an unidentifiable slimy smelly thing in your next deep clean. ick.
