Worried About Drowning in Pool

Post by Guest » Wed Aug 11, 2010 10:47 pm

Starters.
Koopa, Pearl, Nikki: tiny little crabs
Meemo, Simba: small
Tybee: small, but a little bigger that simba

I just put a pool in. It's pretty deep for my size of crabs. I have gravel and shells in it. One shell is huge. Takes up half the pool. It's a big clam shell half.

Then on the other side there is a smaller shell and a plant droops over Ito the water.

Meemo was the first to go explore. She went for a drink and fell in. She first grabbed on the plant ad pulled herself out, but as she pulled out she slipped back in. Then she climbed up the clam shell on got out.

I'm just worried that my smaller crabs won't be able to get out. Is there a safe way to test if try will safely be ableyo get out?

I really never worried about it until one of my E's drowned tonight. I dont think there is a way to test it but i would suggest adding more objects that you think. Its better to have more things to use to climb out than less. Good luck! :)

Also : Meemo is the only crab I've seen to go into the pool / get out of the pool

I actually bought one of the nets from Michaels....and I boiled it for an hour in dechlorinated water and are attached to a climber decoration...I actually cut it so the net sits in the water and I use a half clam shell to weigh it down...that way if they get stuck they can climb up the net...sure it soaks up a wee bit more water...and the salt water turns it a bit white and crispy but my teeny gets in and out of the water with no problems

That's a really good idea! I'll have to try it out today!

I've only found one crab dead in a pool before, it was an E also. I think it was because she cut her abdomen on her shell though, the spiral in the shell was collapsed.
I wouldn't worry about it. Just put a small crab in, if it can climb out, then don't worry about it. :)

I used to put a big bumpy shell in the bottom with l lots of choya wood and plants going into the pool to make sure little ones can get out. I now have the clay pools and they have groves in all sides that the crab can climb with ease from any side. Some people glue on little stones with aquarium sealant to help with little guys getting out. Mainly you just need to watch the littlest guy and see how he makes out.
Im sorry for any that have lost crabs to drowning.. Its sad.. It is normal for a crab who gets hurt like from the collapsed turbo to go into water to try to heal so sometimes that is the case and not always drowning when they are found dead in the water dish.. Its hard to lose one no matter what the cause is...
