Re: Big crab

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do assuming the legs haven't fallen off yet/ there aren't any glaring problems.
What made you think they would fall off? Any areas of concern? I would leave it be until a problem arises.

There are some areas of concern w/ your tank. The blue calcium sand is bad for the crabs and can cement/stick to their bodies, which can hurt them if they try to molt in it. Also, Kaydee is right, I would definitely get many more shells of different sizes, this could cause aggression.

There doesn't seem to be anything else glaringly obvious. Really, I wouldn't worry until they give you a reason to. Good luck! :D

Are you sure that the parts of the legs that's falling off isn't him moulting?
*snip* Inside 79 &humidity 80%
In regards to question 3, the gauges located is the analog guage right? I'm wondering if you have calibrated it yet, to ensure that its reading right? (Analog guages are known for being a bit/lot off. Calibrating humidity found here as for heat, can you compare it to a known thermostat? Like the one for your heating/cooling system to ensure its right?)
*snip* Both. Fresh water has about half salt
Thats great that you offered both, until I read the second sentence... (I'm slightly confused.) Do they have access to proper SW (salt water) and proper FW (freshwater)? (Specifically, FW that doesn't have salt mixed in?) Do you use any dechlorinator? And what brand of salt do you use?

but like Jules said, when you get around to setting up your new tank don't include calcisand in the substrate.

UPDATE: topics have been merged, as the team felt a better response could be offered with all the necessary info in one page

Ok his legs are not manageable & stable like usual. I know bc I can tell the way they move. I know I'm new at this but I can tell how they are bending out and it's like they tuck under while trying to walk.

Fresh water is has drops of salt water & sometimes I did half & half
Salt water I bought from the pet store. He didn't tell what kind it is. But I take my bottles back to him & he refills for $1.

I have med sized smooth gravel over the blue sand. I'll get rid of it right away. Tomorrow 1st thing.

Their legs do bend backwards and away when they are out and walking. Sort of like L shapes.

Try just to offer "pure" freshwater, they will make their own "saltwater mix" and the FW is commonly used for drinking and maintain proper hydration - salt added to that is going to hinder this hydration process IMO. But, do you have a dechlorinator? If not, please get one ASAP as it removes chlorine, chloramine and heavy metal; which all are dangerous to crab. Buy one for fish and look for a dechlorinator that says on the bottle that it removes chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals! A good one that i "enjoy" using is prime.

As for the saltwater mix, do you know how its made? Does it use salt specifically for marine fish? If possible, ask about it next time you pop in to ensure its the "right one" for crabs.

I will do the fresh now. Is this bad bad???
And yes I have dechlorinator on hand. I thought I read 'distilled water' was ok. Do I add dechlorinator to distilled? If so, I'm in a heap of trouble!!

Not really. Its just not ideal IMO. :)
Distilled water is ok to offer it plain as it is, however I would still reccomend adding it in just in case the company adds anything to it - like chlorine for a longer shelf life.

Oh, yeah. Eating is an indication that he may want to moult soon!

Also just want to reinterate...
You must have two water dishes one fresh one salt. The salt needs to be marine grade (instant ocean is a popular brand). The dechlorinator is used to remove heavy metals and toxins (seachem prime is a trusted brand as JJ said).

It's really great you care so much about them! Good luck :)

Why would his claw(s) being doing this? The fact that he ate quite a bit last nite is encouraging.

I have no clue on this one. The best thing i can say is make the conditions as good as you can. It should repair itself during next molt or couple of molts. There is no medicine or vets for crabs really, though honey is known to be miraculous stuff for crabbies (all natural).
