Limp or dead crab need help ASAP

Post by jfs » Sun Jun 11, 2017 10:57 pm

I came home and found steve half way out of his shell limp, not moveing. I picked him up and he fell out on my hand. He dose not stink like fish, or stink at all.

Please tell me if I should keep him in my ISO or toss him :(

Definitely keep in ISO until he smells- he needs to be respelled ASAP. Rinse his abdomen and his shell in dechlorinated fresh water, very gently uncurl his abdomen and back him into the shell.

It's possible he is surface molting.
Could you fill out the emergency template so we can better get an idea of why he may be doing this?

You have shallow substrate correct? Than this could be a surface milt.

Leave the crab alone until it starts to smell or surface molts. Cut off the top of a 2 liter soda bottle and place over the crab. Press down into substrate.

P.S. Even if you filled out an emergency template a couple of days ago, linking that thread here could help save us time in helping you.

Definitely a surface molt with the shallow substrate. Do what @soilentgringa suggested.

I doubt that will be enough substrate for the 40 gallon either. You'd want it about half filled which would be 20 gallons of substrate = four 50 pound bags of playsand and a block of cocofiber.

Zoomed fresh and salt water conditioner and most food labeled for "Hermit Cab", can both be unsafe for crabs or isn't doing them any good.
Please see the safe food list and the list of safe and effective water treatments like Instant Ocean for salt water and something like Prime for fresh. The salt water also needs to be treated with Prime before it is treated with instant ocean. And you might want to consider checking the "Safe Food" list and maybe consider feeding alternatives to the "Zoomed hermit crab food". They need a variety of foods (fruit, veg, proteins, cuttle bone, organic raw honey, ) to truly thrive.
