Please help I don't know what I'm doing
Please help I don't know what I'm doing
I have done some research and still not sure.
I got my hermit crab 12 days ago and didn't know anything about taking care of one. I have a 10 gal tank freshwater and saltwater with eco earth subtrate.
I woke up this morning and Hermine was gone. I looked around the tank and dug some in but I had to go to work so I just got home and dug some more and found her all the way at the very bottom.
Is she okay at the bottom? Is she trying to molt? The substrate started growing white mold on the top so I want to change it out. Can I and what can I use other than sand?

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
-eco earth 4-6 inches
2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
-no
3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
-no
4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
-premixed hydrate saltwater solution for hermit crabs I'm wondering if it's safe
- all living things freshwater conditioner for hermit crabs 4 drops per 8 fl oz
5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
- pellet food I got at the pet store which is all she eats when she does eat
- apples and kale she never touches
6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
- August 16th 12 days ago
7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
- Not yet
8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
- 10 gal aquarium with no lid
9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
- 1
10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
- 1
11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
- not that I know of
12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
- haven't yet
13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
- in the freshwater dish there is
14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
- No but I do have a coconut hut I'm putting in
15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?

It seems like a lot to buy and get used to, but sometimes the pet stores are pretty clueless when it comes to hermit crabs. Hermit crabs are very confusing and complex creatures, so it's not your fault.sierra wrote:1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
-eco earth 4-6 inches
T- a minimum of 6 inches of substrate should be used. Many of us have found success with a mixture of play sand and eco earth (ee) with a 5:1 ratio. Try not to buy the hermit crab sand, it's just overpriced play sand.
2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
-no
T- gauges should be used. You can find a digital thermometer and humidity gauge at Walmart for $10 or so. I use one by accurite. The minimum temp is 80F, with a minimum humidity level of 80%.
3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
-no
T- to achieve 80F, you might want to get an under tank heater(should be placed above the substrate along the entirety of the back of the tank). I use an ultratherm uth from reptilebasics.com.
T- hermit crabs need dechlorinated marine grade saltwater and dechlorinated freshwater. Unfortunately, many products labeled "hermit crab" are unsafe. Instead of using these products, use prime dechlorinator (I found mine on amazon) for freshwater and prime dechlorinator with instant ocean salt (can be found at most pet stores) for Marine salt water. The water bowls should be deep enough for the hermit crabs to submerge themselves completely. But, they also need to get out, so I put some plastic mesh on the side of my water bowls. I also use Tupperware containers because they are deep enough for my hermit crabs.
5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
- pellet food I got at the pet store which is all she eats when she does eat
- apples and kale she never touches
T- unfortunately, commercial food for hermit crabs is bad too. An all natural variety diet with plenty of animal protein should be fed. There is a food section on this forum, so when I find it I'll post a link on this topic.
T- lids are good to use to keep humidity in. I use a glass lid, but if you'd like to use a mesh lid, put saran wrap over the mesh to prevent moisture from escaping.
9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
- 1
T- despite their name, hermit crabs are social animals. When everything seems to be going well soon, you might want to get another one to keep him company.
10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
- 1
T- I've heard that a good rule of thumb to follow is 3-5 shells per crab. Make sure that you're getting the right shells, too. I buy mine from Naples seashell company sometimes, but their shipping is pretty expensive. So, you can go to craft stores and buy some shells (with circular openings). When you get them from pet stores, they are coated in toxic paint and are WAY overpriced.
11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
- not that I know of
12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
- haven't yet
13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
- in the freshwater dish there is
T- sponges aren't necessary. The crabs don't use them to drink, and the sponges just grow mold. As previously mentioned, you'll just need something that they can use to climb out on.
14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
- No but I do have a coconut hut I'm putting in
15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?

Thank you for replying. I've researched a lot on the website I've found it very helpful. I live close to the beach so I thought I'd have time to get everything set up since it's still warm here. I got Hermine at a flee market and after seeing how they were taken care of I wish I could have them all. I'm going to refer the lady to this site.

Good! You should tell her about this site. It's unfortunate that some animals are treated this way and it's good to spread the knowledge. Thank you so much for doing your research and caring about your hermit crabs.sierra wrote:Thank you for replying. I've researched a lot on the website I've found it very helpful. Re: Please help I don't know what I'm doing
Hello! Looks like Tom covered a good majority of it here- but there are a few things I'd like to mention.
Substrate: Substrate should be 6 inches or 3 times the height of your largest crab (whichever is deeper). It should also be mixed with dechlorinated marine saltwater or dechlorinated freshwater to make the substrate sandcastle consistency.
You need to know what the humidity and the temperature is for your crabs. You can buy an Acurite guage from Walmart if you are interested They are $8, digital, run on batteries, and tell you temp and humidity currently as well as low and high for last 24 hours. You can find them in the home improvement section by the air filters. Minimum heat and humidity should be 80/80. Hermit crabs have modified gills and need the humidity to breathe.
I agree with the Prime and Instant Ocean!!
www.reptilebasics.com or www.beanfarm.com have great ultratherm heaters.
Foods should be organic when possible. Hermit crabs are sensitive to pesticides and fertilizers.

Unsafe food list: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 25&t=92556
Food pyramid: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 25&t=92554
The HCA recommends 3-5 shells per hermit crab. I personally recommend more. It never hurts to have more There are incorrect shells to buy. Here is the shell guide: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 24&t=92552
Shells can be purchased online, (ebay, etsy, shell stores). Hobby lobby, michaels, joanns also have shells. You can use their 40% off coupons - and each of them accept the others coupons
You definitely need a top - I personally prefer glass lids
Welcome to the addicting world of crabbing

Re: Please help I don't know what I'm doing
After I found her yesterday I put the subtrate back in and set up. I also added my hut. I had to move her back to the top so I wouldn't bury her but she hasn't dug back down yet.
I wanted to go ahead and get another hermit crab when i buy the rest of the stuff I need but I don't know if I should wait until Hermine has molted

If she is surface moulting, you can either section of her side of the tank or just wait... She won't mind either way... (I would suggest holding off until moulted however!)

Re: Please help I don't know what I'm doing
The probable answer to your question is yes, she is most likely going to molt. The mold is a problem. It's true, you should moniter temperature & humidity. I have had 5 crabbies, starting about 4 yrs ago, in a 25 gallon tank. So your 10 gallon is ok. I've kept my gages, with the help of a heat lamp in the winter & a spray bottle of plain water, both between about 68-78. Below 65 they may become inactive. If tank gets too dry just give a few sprays onto dirt and toys (things to climb on, they love to climb). Better to dry than to moist, hence the mold. They do get very lonely! She definitely needs a friend, maybe 2 at most for that size tank. Find ones about her size. You also need more empty shells, they can be picky. I would carefully scrape off mold & just leave her alone. They can be under for 2-4 weeks. They need peace & quiet during molts. Have a lil water & food in tank in case it's a false alarm & peek in a few times a day. If she dies, trust me, the smell can make you throw up. Don't be alarmed at a slight smell, that's normal. YOU WILL KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. Please be patient. Too many people give up & presume the worst. If molting, chances are that at some point you'll hear little squeaks or scraping sounds, that's a good sign. Also, do not remove her until she eats her skin (which looks like a whole other crab because it often comes off in one big piece...wierd, I know!) mine don't have energy till they've eaten all the skin they shed. You'll learn. I know, it's AMAZING how tricky their care is. Also, try little pieces of carrot or brocolli or a plain Cheerio for snacks. Hang in there, they depend on us.
Re: Please help I don't know what I'm doing
I bought a temp and humidity monitor last night and its at 75% humidity and 73°F still don't have anything to help boost it and I have her part of a banana that she didn't touch. When i woke up I found her under the new monitor

Re: Please help I don't know what I'm doing
Mold is not a problem for the crabs but it is for us. Don't worry about it. Just don't breathe it in. Please in the future, never dig up a crab. They know what they are doing. When they are preparing to molt they usually don't eat. Try to be hands off - they really are prey animals and most do prefer not to be held - especially if she is getting ready to molt. Molting can take a long time. Sometimes weeks, sometimes months. It varies crab to crab. They will shed their entire exoskeleton and then eat it. During this time their exoskeleton will be very soft and need time to harden. Please read the section in our forum section about molting. Also, misting is great for boosting humidity - but it can also lead to flooding. Please don't worry about decorating your tank - it is more important to focus on heat and humidity right now. You can use a regular light to heat the tank - or drape warm towels from the dryer (no dryer sheets) over the tank - but those things are temporary. Good luck!
