Re: Lost pincher?
I'm sorry you lost your crab. Sometimes things happen to them we can't figure out. They are still rather mysterious creatures.
If you have a missing crab I would not tear apart the crabitat until you see him. Although a deceased crabs will have a very bad fishy smell like you described. The smell could be the one you you just found. When you remove that crab the smell should go away quickly. If the smell continues after that crab is is gone unfortunately another crab may have passed as well.
Looking at your crabitat it looks as if your substrate is dry and about 4 inches deep on one side and about 2 inches deep on the other. Dry substrate can cause issues with molting crabs. Perhaps your guy had an issue with that pincher from molting and dropped it as Joe mentioned earlier.
Once you find your missing crabs and before adding more I would add at least two bags of playsand mixed to sandcastle consistency to your existing Eco Earth. Here is the link to our care guide for proper substrate.

The black part on the bottom is almost 2 inches and the glass goes all the way to the bottom of that. It’s like some kind of trim. The bottom isn’t level with the top of the black part. Idk if that makes sense? Currently this lockdown has closed all stores so I can’t go get any more sand or EE

Re: Lost pincher?
Wish I lived near you! I have 3 extra bags of sand and 1/2 a bag of eco earth leftover from my upgrade. Have you checked with your local Lowe's or Home Depot? Mine in PA are still open, but are closing a lot earlier. I totally understand if you wouldn't feel safe going out though even if they were open. Sorry about your crabby.CheekyChels wrote:The black part on the bottom is almost 2 inches and the glass goes all the way to the bottom of that. It’s like some kind of trim. Re: Lost pincher?
It’s just hectic going out and it’s quite a far drive from me to get to Home Depot or anything like that. The pet store didn’t even have any left today when I went but they’ve also been selling out of hermit crabs so I’m assuming people are buying all the EE and crab stuff to go with them. Other than the sub is there anything anyone can see I need to change? Do you think I have enough hiding spots? I have lots of plants and things for them to climb on but they haven’t climbed anything so far which is kind of disappointing.

It looks like you have plenty of climbing/hiding spots for them, which is good. The only other thing I noticed is the shape of your shells. Your crabbies might not use a few of them if they are PPs. PPs prefer shells with round openings, like turbos. I don't think that would cause your crab to cut his own claw off though. Maybe he was still having issues from when he was at the pet store, and just might have never recovered.CheekyChels wrote:It’s just hectic going out and it’s quite a far drive from me to get to Home Depot or anything like that. Re: Lost pincher?
It’s hard to find turbos and the shells they don’t really use have mostly been in packs with the turbos so I had to get them and they’re mostly for decoration at this point. The turbos in there are slightly bigger than the shells they have on but idk where to get them besides ordering them and since I don’t have a mailing address it’s kinda hard to get stuff shipped. I live in an rv park and don’t want to pay $50 a month for a PO Box. I might just have to order some and have it mailed to my parents address an hour away and go pick it up after this coronavirus stuff is over with. *sigh* I saw some pretty turbo shells on someone’s post the other day I wanted to look into but idk how I’d get them at this point.

Re: Lost pincher?
I totally understand. I know you are doing the best you can for your crabbies. This is a rough time, and something as simple as going out to the store isn't so simple anymore. Money is tight too, I know it is on my end! I know you don't have a mailing address, but when you are able to get to your parents place in the future, you can try having shells shipped from Naples. I got a few turbos from there and I have 2 crabs that chose from them right away. Also keep checking on the trading/selling page here on the HCA. I got some very nice turbos for free, and I just had to pay shipping. @Maddamay32 has an Etsy shop, ACrabADay with a few turbos for sale. They weren't large enough for my biggest crabby, so I bought two 1.5" shells and and 1 5/8" shell from CrabbyKatesCrabShack. They are very nice and reasonably priced.CheekyChels wrote:It’s hard to find turbos and the shells they don’t really use have mostly been in packs with the turbos so I had to get them and they’re mostly for decoration at this point. Def try Etsy and Naples. I'm sure you'll find something you like. I had a hard time finding 1.5" openings too.CheekyChels wrote:I’ll have to check that out! I need 1” which are proving to be hard to find on amazon. I’ll have to check out Etsy next
