lethargic crab

Post by doth » Tue Dec 29, 2020 3:08 pm

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
playsand/ee, about 8 inches

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
Yes, typically 90%, and 78-71F

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
Ultratherm on back of tank (36”x11” i think?)

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
Fresh & salt, dechlorinated w/ prime, instant ocean for msw, using directions on the box

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
Fresh & frozen fruits/veggies, dried insects, dry food mixes from etsy, bee pollen, daphnia cubes, dried seaweed etc. Dry food replaced every 2-3d. Fresh stuff I try to take out every day- often it is moldy when i take it out even if i take it out the next morning though.

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
PP, adopted a couple years ago.

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
Last molted starting in mid January, lasted 7 or 8 weeks

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
Current tank (upgraded april 2019) is a 45gal, glass lid.

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
4, he is my largest, around golf ball sized or a little smaller. The others are a bit smaller than him.

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
Usually like 10-15, I swap every few months.

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
I don’t think so

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
I spot clean when I change the food, haven’t done any deep cleaning.
***A month or two ago there was some green stuff on the tank wall just above the substrate. I removed the top inch or so of sub from the areas where I saw it and wiped the sides of the tank down just with water. I haven’t seen any issues since. Hoping it wasn’t a bacterial bloom cause I know that is never good.

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
No

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
No, aside from new food dishes (plastic & ceramic)

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?
No I don’t handle them unless I have to, they seem to bathe regularly on their own so I leave them alone.

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.
Father Pellegrini was very lethargic this morning when I woke up. Last night he seemed normal and was climbing around on his tank furniture like usual. He moved a little when I picked him up.

We set up a hospital tank: large critter keeper with ultratherm on side, paper towels, small dishes of fresh & msw water, small food dish (bee pollen, honey, powdered shrimp, ‘repair my exo’ dried food, and seaweed), and his favorite coconut hut. I put some damp spagnum moss in the corning for humidity and sprayed the tank down before placing him inside. We covered all but the last ½” or so of the lid with saran wrap.

I’m at work but my partner is keeping an eye on him. He’s only moved a little and now has bubbles covering his face (not present this morning). I read those are maybe from lack of humidity so my partner just sprayed down the tank. The humidity gauge had dropped to the 70’s but now is 85-90%. Unfortunately we only have an analog gauge for the iso tank and I know those are not ideal.

Does anyone have any insight on the bubbles? Would it be helpful to bathe him tonight if he seems active?

We are concerned he may be trying to surface molt as he has been up since March and he normally molts a couple times a year. There is no smell coming from him that we can notice.Image

I wish I could remember what @wodesorel said about crabs bubbling at the mouth. Someone on the FB group had a similar issue a few months ago.

I did a quick Google search and came across this article. I am not sure how accurate the information is. I'm not sure the are referring to marine or land crabs either. Hopefully that article will be able to help until someone else with more experience can chime in.

thank you, that article was helpful!

the bubbles have not reappeared- they seemed to have resolved when we increased the iso tank's humidity in Tuesday.

however, he hasn't moved since then. no death smell. we are hoping he is trying to surface molt. maybe we just have to wait it out.
