Since you've come to the emergency forum, we know you want a fast answer to your question. In order for us to figure out the problem as quickly as possible, we ask that you answer the following questions as best you can. Some of them may seem odd, but they're all designed to give us the information we need to give you a good solution for your problem. The things in the [ brackets ] are there to make this post easier to read once submitted. Thanks!

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?

coconut substrate, 4 inches deep

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?

yes, 80% humidity, temp is 70 F

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?

no

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?

dechlorinated fresh and salt water

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?

pellets, shrimp, eggshell, mineral blocks, coconut etc.

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?

2 crabs, both PP

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?

i dont know, i think they both molted a few months ago

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?

20 gal glass tank with mesh lid (plastic wrap on top of lid)

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?

2, medium small

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?

about 7

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?

no

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?

every week

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?

no

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?

no

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?

my 3rd hermit crab was murdered a month ago

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.

Blue, one of the hermies, was hiding under the water dish, i found him today and it appears he has ripped off his small claw and a few legs, he has enough food and calcium though! why did he do this and how can I help him? :(

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?

coconut substrate, 4 inches deep
Curly - Is this at least two to three times as deep as your largest crab? Is it moistened to hold it's shape?

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?

yes, 80% humidity, temp is 70 F
Curly - Your humidity is great, but your temp is a bit low. Sustained temps under 72 can be harmful to crabs. Are you able to get a UTH for the back of the tank, to boost your heat a bit? Over 75, and closer to 80, would be ideal.

Curly - Be sure they are getting a variety of foods, including fruits and veggies as well as the calcium and protein.

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?

2 crabs, both PP

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?

i dont know, i think they both molted a few months ago

about 7

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?

no

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?

every week
Curly - I'm thinking you mean just surface cleaning, not a removal of all the sub?

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?

no

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?

no

Curly - Was he buried underground, under the water dish? Crabs don't 'rip off' their limbs, they drop them in an effort to conserve energy. Are you certain that he didn't molt, and that the limbs you see are just exo he hasn't eaten yet?
There are a few things that could be improved in your set up, but sometimes it is a product of everything they went through before we got them.

He wasn't buried, just underneath the water dish, I guess it's possible it may have been a molt because Blue was a bit of a light peach color when i found him.. I also realized that I don't really have enough salt water, so I put in a slightly deeper dish, maybe he wasn't getting enough baths in the saltwater tub?

Is he missing parts of his limbs? Were the pieces you found hollow or solid?

Now that I look at them, they're hollow and he doesn't seem to be missing any limbs, it was probably an exo

If the limbs you found are hollow, and he is not missing any, then yes it is exo. If he dug in the sub and went under the water bowl, that's buried. Some people will 'double up' the water bowls so that they dont' disturb a crab that has buried underneath them.

Okay, I'm glad it's just an exo! I guess when I saw limbs I just freaked out and forgot about the fact it might be an exo lol :P
