Doh! Will they be okay?

Post by hermitsinnc » Thu Jan 12, 2023 11:47 pm

This past weekend, as a special treat, I gave the crabbies a slice of fresh apple and a slice of zuchinni. I fully intended to remove them in the morning, but we woke up sick. Then, the crabbies dragged sand and moss over them and I forgot all about them.
Tonight, I saw a slice of apple in our kitchen, and I suddenly realized I hadn't taken the stuff out of the crabitat. I rushed to get them, and found that under the moss, the apple had began to rot and there were at least 3 colors of mold/fungus/bacteria/who knows what growing there. (No bugs, thankfully.) I scooped out the top inch or so of sub in that spot (the gross stuff didn't permeate any farther).
Was removing that enough, or do I need to do more? Will everyone be okay?

Kendall is currently molting (I assume) and has been for a few months. Mitchelle is up, and I saw Maxwell last night.

I didn't fill out the emergency forum since I felt it was overkill, but all my tank specs are good (80/80, 5:1 and deep sub, fresh and salt water, etc.)
3 PPs: Maxwell (small), Mitchelle (medium/small), Kendall (medium/large)
also have 10gal freshwater fishtank w/ neon tetras, pygmy cories, and nerite snails

Mold isn't harmful to crabs, you just take it out when you see it. I often have things go moldy in my tank....come to think of it there are probably some fuzzy things in there right now! And I won't be taking them out until tomorrow night because I'm a lazy crabber! One time I left a 'used' cob of corn in the tank for so long it looked like it was a fuzzy football when I finally removed it! LOL!
