Rescue crab behavior?

Post by Sunny Solstice » Tue Feb 21, 2023 9:28 pm

Since you've come to the emergency forum, we know you want a fast answer to your question. In order for us to figure out the problem as quickly as possible, we ask that you answer the following questions as best you can. Some of them may seem odd, but they're all designed to give us the information we need to give you a good solution for your problem. The things in the [ brackets ] are there to make this post easier to read once submitted. Thanks!

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
Play sand 5:1 with cocofiber depth is ~6 inches

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
yes to gauges, they are located midway to top of tank, and read 75 degrees and 80 humidity

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
UTH but on back of tank

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
Both fresh and salt are available. Instant ocean for salt, and dechlorinated with something from Seachem... forget the name

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
Fresh food is replaced every day, food from hermitgrub is replaced 2 days

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
It is a PP and I was given it about 3 weeks ago

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
I don't know

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing? 20 tall tank with full hood

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
just this sick guy I don't know how big it is because it is in a too small shell that is painted... :(

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
I have 10 other shells in there

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently? no

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
It is a fresh build so not cleaned yet, water dishes are cleaned every day

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
no sponges, water dishes are cleaned manually every day

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
its a new set up

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?
I have had crabs before for many years.

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.

This little crab was "gifted" to me because her daughter didn't want it anymore. It was housed in a critter keeper on gravel in typical sponge bob decorations. It came with a painted shell . It is about .5 to .75 inches in size, although it is hard to tell.

I set up a new tank, food water, the works. When the crab is picked up, it is very lively, does not pinch and crawls around. When I placed it into new tank, I thought it would dig and molt, but no, it sits in its crab hut and doesn't move at all. I have smoothed out the surface sand, and no movement, no food intake no water intake . It has been like this for 1.5 weeks now. about 4 days ago I placed it into the food dish, and it just ran to its hut. I know its stressed beyond belief, and understand it might never get over this, I was wondering if anyone can offer advice.

Thanks so much
.

Every crab de-stresses in its own way. Your setup seems ideal; all you can do now is wait and hope for the best.
3 PPs: Maxwell (small), Mitchelle (medium/small), Kendall (medium/large)
also have 10gal freshwater fishtank w/ neon tetras, pygmy cories, and nerite snails
