Hermit acting odd

Post by Crazyman23 » Thu Oct 05, 2023 9:08 pm

Since you've come to the emergency forum, we know you want a fast answer to your question. In order for us to figure out the problem as quickly as possible, we ask that you answer the following questions as best you can. Some of them may seem odd, but they're all designed to give us the information we need to give you a good solution for your problem. The things in the [ brackets ] are there to make this post easier to read once submitted. Thanks!

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? play sand, about 8" deep and bowls out at a corner to about 2" deep.

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read? just temperature, reads at 75 degrees. On the upper front glass

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what? 55 watt heater set at 75

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)? just salt water, instant ocean reef salt. Reading at 1.025 on a refractometer

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced? mostly algea and some shrimp. They are mainly to keep the tank tidy

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known? this one I've had for 2 months. Blue legged hermit

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen? 2 days ago

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing? 36 gallon tank

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they? 10, blue legged crabs, no more then an inch long,

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any? around 50 shells scattered around the sand

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently? none

12. How often do you clean the tank and how? cleaning glass every 3 days, doing a water change when parameters are off, filter as needed.

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned? no

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently? nope

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)? not sure if you guys know about this type. But it is for a fully marine hermit crab. So this is in a reef tank and not a terrarium.

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail. so recently I got a new crab. It has been acting a bit odd compared to the other 10 in the tank or the other 30 in another tank. This crab will climb to the top of the live rock and jump off, flip itself over, and will move with its shell high up in the water like it's on its tippy toes. Of all the hermits I got it's acting odd and I've never seen one do this in 5 years of keeping them. This crab mainly started doing this after it molted.

I would suggest finding a marine crab forum.

Thanks. Was hoping some of the behavior had some that translated to terrestrial herms, alot of their behavior is close to the 10 tereatrials I got between 3 tanks. I guess my little odd blue legged is just a show off and dare devil. He will eat normal with the others in his tank when I introduce some shrimp, or other food, then he's off to his crazy antics.
