If it says "Freshwater Aquarium Salt", no it is not. If it says reef salt/for saltwater aquariums, it should be good! Good luck!

Aquarium salt is for freshwater fish tanks, I forget what exactly it does for the tanks but it isn't marine grade salt.Softymom wrote:My husband just happens to have Aquarium salt. Would that be safe? I am very new to hermit crabs.
When you go to the petstore ask them specifically for salt to set up a reef or saltwater aquarium for saltwater fish. Most of us use Instant Ocean, but Oceanic is also okay.
I also wanted to throw in that Tammy from the Hermit Crab Patch actually posted about her learning experience with hermit crabs. She kept having jumbo crabs pass on her and couldn't figure out why until one day her crab buried itself in the back yard. (Florida) They put a laundry basket down with a brick on top of it over where the crab buried and weeks later, it popped back up freshly molted. If your crab buried in the yard maybe it will come back up in a couple of months with some hairy legs.

OMG! That is crazy! I can't believe they dont just flee as far as they can! Do you think its because they've been in captivity???soilentgringa wrote:Aquarium salt is for freshwater fish tanks, I forget what exactly it does for the tanks but it isn't marine grade salt.Softymom wrote:My husband just happens to have Aquarium salt. I know that probably doesn't make you feel too much better, but at least you're not in Maine or a cold blizzardy state.

Well...in Florida it stands to reason that conditions are good for them as far as heat and humidity. From what I've read, PP's will travel miles inland into forested areas and some may even just return to the beach to mate or lay eggs. Indos and PP's have been observed filling their shells with water from puddles in the wild.
I know most crabs that have been held in poor conditions dig asap so it makes sense to me that a new crab would just start burying wherever the digging was good.
