I can see what looks like a large claw , just more muted in colour . I can't smell anything .

The top part of what fell out almost looks like snakeskin . It was the claws and legs that threw me for a loop .

Ok, ISO the crab and provide cuttlebone bone and protein. I don't think you need to give water but another crabber chime in. And are the legs and claw of the exo hollow? Make sure you include that in the ISO bottle.

The exo.. does it have a big pale soft tail attached? Maybe a couple more pics would help. As long as you see a crab in there for sure i believe this was deff a molt

I agree. Just make sure you never dig up a crab so this doesn't happen again. Surface molts are not good for a crab.

Hi Jennycat, it appears from your pictures and description that your hermie has molted, and the skeleton your seeing is the exoskeleton, like how a snake sheds skin. Did you say you dug to find them? Or did this happen while the crab was on the surface? Surface molting is not normal and should always be considered an emergency situation.

Yes she did dig him up, unfortunately right before he molted. She now knows not to.

He was under the moss , unfortunately I pulled him out yesterday . He stayed on the surface and I picked him up to check on him today . When doing that his exo fell off his shell . I have him isolated now with his exo and cuttle bone as per suggestions inside a plastic bottle top .

After molt time varies. This is the stage where the fresh exo hardens. Time varies, he looks small so probably around a month.
