Crab Without Shell Through Glass View!

What happened was he already molted and hardened (found exo) and my E already molted once, and just changed out of his painted shell. He changed into a whale eye, and he is now in a small turbo! My E likes to change shells apparently.

Es don't molt well

Fred is not an E. Fred is my biggest crab. And E's usually die within their molts, or lose a limb.

Do you have any sources to back this up?

I've had 3 E's for 2 years who have tripled in size and never had a bad molt.

Many of our members have E's and the only common issue I've seen is that if E's don't have enough space, or proteins in their diet they have been known to attack tankmates.

I remember some old posts saying that E's will die at some point because of a molt in captivity. That is just what I read.

Older crabs (of all sorts) are more likely to die during molts because molting takes up more energy in larger animals & so they will often eventually reach a size where they just don't have the reserves necessary to pull it off any more. That may have been what the post you read was getting at??

Like 75% will die for some reason during a molt and leave nothing but an empty shell that is found on the next clean, and the other 25% will go naked in the water dish. Size doesn't seem to matter much when they pass. These guys don't live super long in captivity, on average 4 years or less, but there will be the occasional outlier.
