Sorry slow typer here I missed those messages before mine LOL
Here's a link to the file on Molting, I found that and all the other care guides very helpful when I first got my hermits -and also when I went to pick up a rescue that turned out to be a surface molter when I got there.

You'll want to keep him covered with the exoskeleton and do not disturb him, and keep it dark, instead of a soda bottle top you can use any kind of Tupperware or plastic container or whatever you have that will keep the other crabs away from him during this process. He needs to eat the exo in order to build strength to harden.

For some reason I'm not able to find the file specially on surface molting, but I'll link you the basic care guide which explains it and what to do when it happens.

Actually all the molters I've had to iso. Are ready to go in the tank around day four AFTER they've eaten their last bit of exo. I just had to iso a molter a couple weeks ago fully recovered after a week and a half. It really depends on the crab. My general rule of thumb is when they are up walking around looking for food they can handle them selves back in the crabitat. So sorry this happened to you, it's very scary the first time. I could only imagine how you felt with a surface molt.

I had a surface molt when I first started keeping crabs. I iso'ed him until he ate his exo which took around 4 days (like KL mentioned) and then he was ready to go.

Thank you everyone ! I can see that he has moved today and I can see the point of a leg sticking out of his shell . He is on top of the exo .

He's been very active tonight , eating and moving his feet in and out . I left him in the pop bottle top , squished the bottle to the bottom of the tank so others can't get in at him. Will this be adequate for the duration of his recoup time ?

Yes that will be good. You can add moss in the bottle for a humidity boost. I would wait to release him until you no longer notice him eating the exo. In the future, sticking the bottle just an inch or two into the sub will work- you don't want to potentially collapse other crabs tunnels

Hey Jennycat! I know I'm late coming in on this thread. I hope ur little guy is doing ok! From the looks of it, many HCA members have answered a lot of your questions:) It seems like your going in the right direction for some happy hermies! In case it wasn't already addressed (and if it was, my apologies!) , I would keep your crab baby in ISO with just his exo until he is done eating his exo. After that I would continue to keep him in ISO for a few days after and make sure to give him plenty of protein, organic raw honey, organic peanut butter. When he seems to be acting his normal self, give him a dip in the freshwater pool and re-introduce him to the rest of the guys ;) Good luck!! I will be rooting for him!!

My little guy is still doing great eating exo and moving his legs in and out. He is still isolated in the pop bottle top . I have been dropping cuttle bone through the hole in the top .
Question ..if I wanted to put moss in could I move the bottle and put it in and put it back ? Also some exo is not right in front of him , will he search to find the rest ?

Moss probably isn't worth it I was recommending you put it in before you ISO. If he is crawling around and wants it he will find it.
