Re: Unresponsive Mall rescue...
Another update on our unresponsive crab:
He's in a 1gal ISO tank, inside our main tank. No movement, no limpness to the point of slipping out of his shell, no stink. We have fresh and salt water in there, a cup in its side for him to hide in, and about 3" of substrate, and the main tank keeps the temp and humidity in ok range. We don't disturb him except to change food and water, but I think we lost him, because all tho he isn't loosely falling out of the shell, he isn't really "guarding" his shell entrance, just has been completely unresponsive. (We have left him undisturbed since putting the ISO in the main tank.) Should I keep waiting for a stink, or decomposition?
Added a bubbler to the main tank, humidity and heat have been at 82%&82F for the last 24 hours. Trying to keep it that way.
Also, have a heater on its way for my spare 10 gallon, otherwise it's all set up... And purchased a secondhand 30 gallon for $10 today, which I'll begin prepping this weekend, as well as *another* tank of unknown size yet coming as a secondhand freebie from a friend, sometime this week... So, suddenly plenty of rooms! Lol.

They hold better on the tote than they ever did on the glass tank I had.

Keep waiting - nothing worse than the 'what if' feeling of prematurely disposing of a crab.CrabMother wrote:Another update on our unresponsive crab:

An update on our mall rescue:
Sniffed crabitat (where the ISO tank was being kept) this AM, no smell. Changed waters, including the ISO, turned lights off. Temp has been consistent at 82F, humidity 80-85%. Shut the room door to keep it quiet, stress free. Went about my day, eventually came back home after getting kiddo from school. Opened kiddo's bedroom door, and the stench was awful. Removed ISO, and have him a proper sendoff, still with his shell, in a hole in the backyard. (Dramatic, but it made kiddo feel better, and I have to agree, it didn't feel right trying to give another crab his shell.)
In happier news, the two we rescued with him are doing beautifully and I've now got an empty, big tank to set up for the Es (I suck at gauging gallons, but it's like four feet long and two feet wide?) and a ten to put a couple small PPs in (just waiting on a heater for it), and one more tank of unknown size yet coming. We may run out of people room, but the crabbies will be happy.

It's maybe eighteen inches? Shorter than it is wide. I don't have a tape measure or I'd be more exact. XDPinchersAndShells wrote:I'm sorry for your loss!CrabMother wrote:An update on our mall rescue:

Sorry for your loss ... losing a pet is an ugly feeling.
I hope your son doesn't take it too much to heart. Maybe if you try explaining PPS to him, and where they come from in the wild (if you haven't already). I know when I was young, learning about wild animals often made me feel better about their demise.
I hope the rest of your troup thrives!

Re: Unresponsive Mall rescue...
Yeah, we've gone over where they come from, how they're treated before they get to us. Unfortunately, over the last one and a half years, we both have had to learn about loss. He's 12, but was 11 when my 14 year old cat died, suddenly, in my arms. He was there for the whole thing, and I was the most amazed, proud mom when he quoted me, to help me thru that harsh, sudden emptiness. He told me that tho get body was done, the important parts of my best friend would always be with me. A few months later, we had to make the decision to let our elderly Pekingese pass peacefully. Those months were hard on us both, and I know the loss of this crab hurts him, but I also know he can move on, and hope I've taught him healthy ways to cope.LadyJinglyJones wrote:Sorry for your loss ... losing a pet is an ugly feeling.

As sappy as it is, I have been, too. I don't think I'll ever 'get over' losing Inqui kitty, or Jackson. (I still can't even hold another cat, without much inner turmoil and tears.) Having kiddo around helped... But with the place empty of fuzzies, we quickly ended up with a puppy. (Boris the Borador, now over a year old.) ... And eventually a blind, rescued dog. (Wondrous Walker, a boxer mix of unknown but likely very harsh past.) So we're doing alright, even if we miss our passed fuzzies sometimes.LadyJinglyJones wrote:What a great kid!

Re: Unresponsive Mall rescue...
Based off of those measurements it's a 90 gallon! If you ever do get the chance to measure and are like me, (I usually can't focus long enough for math) I'd recommend this calculator! http://www.firsttankguide.net/calculator.php

I got a tape measure, and measured the outside, top, at the black rim. It is 36 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 16 inches tall. The online tank calculator I used came up with 47.6something gallons.
