Missing Crab

Post by Kennyk3n » Wed Mar 18, 2015 11:35 pm

Hi all,

My smallest crab is missing from her shell! A few days ago she partially burrowed and has just been chilling there ever since. Well today I came home and found her shell in the same spot but turned up and empty. I hadn't been home for about 24 hours and the last time I saw her she was still partially buried so I'm not exactly sure how long she's been shell-less. I don't see any trace of her on the surface. I don't want to crush her by digging around but I'm not sure what else to do. Any advice???

Are you sure she didn't change into a different shell?
#1 rule of crabbing - crabs are weird.

Is there any chance she is buried about wear her shell is. Or at the back of her shell I have a PP who is in way to big of shell so you barely see him. Sorry for what you are going through.

Yea, if she had pulled a quick surface molt she might be pulled in extra far.

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? Eco Earth 35% /Playsand Mix 65%

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read? 55 gal. w/ humidity and temp gauge in middle. Temp fluctuates between 80 and 70. Humidity fluctuates anywhere from 90-60% depending on what I set my fogger to.

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what? Daytime bulb on one side, night time bulb on the other. Side heating pad on left and right sides of the tank.

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)? I provide both a freshwater and a saltwater pool. Not sure the brand of salt, but it’s from PetSmart in the hermit crab section. Freshwater is treated with the dechlorinator used for freshwater aquariums.

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced? I have three food dishes. 1) I give them an alternating mix of carrots, kale, spinach, apples, and banana which is replaced every night. 2) Contains calcium powder, crushed mineral block, and calcium bone. 3.) I have a mix of two different pellet foods from Petsmart and coconut treats which I replace every few days depending on how bad they’ve dirtied the bowl and the depending on the moisture levels.

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known? About two weeks and shes a purple pincher.

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen? As far as I know, not since she’s been with me.

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing? 55 gal aquarium tank, open/mesh top. (I’m in the process of making a more secure and solid lid to help keep the moisture in.)

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they? She was my 6th crab and the smallest; shell was a bit smaller than a quarter. My largest crab’s shell is just about the size of a half dollar.

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any? About 10.

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently? None that I know of.

12. How often do you clean the tank and how? Besides picking out food waste, I haven’t needed to clean the tank yet.

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned? One in each pool. I rinse them in extremely hot water for several minutes every other day when I change out my water.

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently? Not since I’ve brought her home.

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)? I purchased her (Artemis) from PetSmart at the same time as my two larger crabs. One has burrowed a few days ago within a few inches of where Artemis dug and partially buried herself. The other has been acting normal, bunking down during the day and active in the evenings and at night.

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail. Please see original post.

That is her pictured above. I dont see any trace of her in her shell and it hasn't moved at all since i found it like that. I wasn't sure if i should dig around the area, bc I'd have to move a log nearby to reach the area and one of my other crabs is burrowed and/or molting in that same area.
