Came home to molted crab in shared tank.

Post by tishprospect » Tue Feb 16, 2016 8:35 pm

Hi
I am new to this group. I want sure where else to go after some research.
I am new to care of hermit crabs. We started with two and they have been thriving. We got a new one and it wasn't very active. I now know that it was molting. We came home last night from a day trip and I found it in the tank on the surface next to it's exoskeleton. The other crabs are not bothering it and it moves occasionally, but not sure if there is something more I should do. I put water close and gave the other ones their own water so they would not bother. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to keep my kids from freaking out unless I know what I can or can't do. I would rather be up front with them so they can understand as well. Thanks in advance!!

I clicked the link, but it came up as not available. Is there another area I can find it?

I wanted to add quickly that I would strongly recommend isolating the hermit crab from the others. Instead of moving him to an ISO tank (Isolation tank) and stressing him out, I would section him off from the other crabs in the location he is in. Either by putting the other hermit crabs in an ISO or cutting a soda bottle in half and place it over him with his exoskeleton and water. If you go with the soda bottle make sure to push it down good so no one can easily dig under it and get to the molter. They tend to give off a fishy smell which attracts the other guys and they will start picking and eating him....

Please correct me if this method is wrong but I wanted to add it quick as I think it's important to keep him away from the others so nothing happens as she is filling out that questionaire
7 PP Hermies I think? Lost count tbh 5 PPs and 2 Es
