HCA: Hermit Crab Association

So I have two pps and they both were split up because when I got my second crab (Jack Sparrow) the first guy (Pinchy Pinchy) was just finishing molting. Today though they were both all good and ready and I really wanted to move them into the same tank (which is my bigger one that is SOOO much better) so they both got a short (separate) little bath since Pinchy Pinchy had just molted a little while ago and I wanted them to smell the same. After they were done I had a box with some paper towels in it, so they could meet in there and dry off. When I put them in there it took them a minute to notice each other, but when they did the walked up to each other and their antenna started going crazy. Then they both put up their pinchers and bowled into each other. Pinchy Pinchy, who is a bit bigger than the other one, jumped on top of Jack Sparrow and was holding him down. And then Pinchy would just sit there and the minute Jack Sparrow would start coming out he would start turning the shell so he was facing Jack Sparrow who was huddled inside! I just watched for a few minutes thinking that this is probably normal, but then I noticed a little piece of something next to them (and I think it was a piece of somebody) and then I split them up. I put them back in their separate tanks. I feel awful for putting Jack Sparrow through so much stress since he is the new guy, and I just don't know what happened! PLEASE help me and if u have any idea what happened please give me advice on what to do! I want my boys to be buddies! Also forgot to mention that Pinchy Pinchy has not been around another crab in YEARS. Not sure if that helps.

A little scrabbling and Antenna feller fights are normal, but if it seems like pinchy Pinchy is trying to "rock" Jack Sparrow out of his shell, this is a shell fight. Make sure that Pinchy Pinchy has plenty of shells, and then I would try to put them back together.

Ok thanks! I currently have three new shells for Pinchy Pinchy arriving today or tomorrow. Pinchy PInchy and Jack Sparrow do have completely different shells, Jack Sparrow's is a long one that sticks out to the side, and Pinchy Pinchy's is a short turbo.... Would Pinchy Pinchy still want Jack Sparrow's shell even though their shell choices r different?

A crabs life is all about the perfect shell....so unfortunately if Jack Sparrow has a shell that pinchy thinks is more perfect than his, or the ones offered, he will have no problem trying to get the better house. Just watch them in the tank when you put them together. I'd suggest and also make sure they each have three proper shell choices to choose from...and they should be fine. The more the better though, and make sure you're getting their favorite kinds. Hopefully with the new shells you'll be good.
