dying or molting

Post by scarlet » Tue Sep 12, 2017 4:04 pm

its been about three days since my little sister ordered her hermit crab online and received it but since it has been here its never out of its shell and is always buried and you can hardly ever see him or find him out of the sand. on the first night he hanged his shell and the next day and from then on hes only been buried he moves to different places sometimes but we never see him eat or drink or socialize with my others and I've been reading on it and i can not tell if he is sick or dying how can i figure i out better? what should i do? oh and the day we got him part of his leg was missing.

Hi! Based off of what you are describing it sounds like he is probably just digging to destress, or preparing to molt. However, if you feel it may be helpful you could fill out this template to further assess the problem: http://www.hermitcrabassociation.com/ph ... 27&t=46102

It's tricky with newer crabs... sometimes you just have to wait & see.

If he seems to be moulting on the surface (casting of his outer body, then eating said casting), let us know.

Till then, do the best you can. :)
