Hermit crab fell out of shell, limp.

Post by Puoyo » Wed Jun 27, 2018 9:56 am

Last night I found one of my hermit crabs laying in the sand, without his shell on. He wasn't moving and when I picked him up to put him in an isolated tank, he didn't move either. I'm currently trying to keep him moist and fed. Does anyone know what happened?

Depending on how long you've had it, it could be PPS. (Post purchase syndrome) PPS is a blanket term that describes what happens when a new crab succumbs to the stresses of being captured and transported in poor conditions. They could also be injured, ill, or have unknown parasites.

If it is alone in the tank and is in a shell, leave it in the dark and make sure you have dechlorinated fresh water for it and maybe some raw honey (non-pasteurized).

Filling out the emergency template will help mods/admins pinpoint what may have happened to better assist you.
