Dead half eaten crab?

Hello,
Most of my crabs have been buried for months in the tank and I figured they were ok underground, I had two come up the other night and they seem pretty happy (climbing and doing normal crab stuff) but then last night just out of nowhere half a crab just turned up from under the sand. It was the tail and a couple legs left inside a shell.
What could have happened. I’m worried my other crabs are also like that under the ground. The sand and whole tank smells a bit and I need to clean out the sand but I know I can’t dig them up because it will kill them even more. What do I do? Should I just dig them up and see how many are still alive. Out of six crabs I know two for sure are alive. It has started to smell my room a little as well.
