1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?
Mix of play sand and eco earth, 10 inches.

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?
Yes. 76-80 F, 80-90% humidity. The probe is mid-way between the front and back of the tank, two or three inches off the substrate.

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?
Yes, Ultratherm UTH on the back of the tank.

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?
Fresh and salt, both treated with Seachem Prime. Salt is Instant Ocean, 1/2 cup per gallon of water.

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?
Fruits, vegetables, seaweed, fish, insects, nuts, seeds, flowers, honey, olive oil, worm castings. Fresh food is replaced every 1-2 days, dry food is replaced every 3-4 days. Cuttlebone and oyster shells are always in the tank for calcium. There's also leaf litter, wood, bark, and moss throughout the tank which I often see them eating.

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?
Purple Pincher, just over 2 years.

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?
Yes, last time was around 4 months ago.

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?
90 gallon glass tank with acrylic lid.

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?
7 crabs, medium to extra large.

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?
20

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?
No.

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?
I spot clean as needed, scoop up any poop piles I see on top of the substrate and remove any old food they've dragged off.

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?
No.

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
No, but the tank was set up fairly recently (see below)

15. Is there any other information you would like to share that might be helpful (anything that is regularly part of your crab care, playtime, bathing, etc.)?
I set up the current tank in September. Prior to that the crabs were in three separate smaller tanks.

16. Please describe the emergency situation in detail.
Two weeks ago I found one of the crabs naked without his shell. I immediately placed him in a small container with his original shell plus two others and within 5 minutes he was in a shell (not his original). He was acting normally, trying to get out of the container, so I placed him back in the tank. I rinsed his original shell with water before returning it to the tank in case there was something in it that had irritated him. By the next day he was back in his original shell so I assumed there must have been some grit or something in it that had caused him to abandon it and which had been washed away when I rinsed it out. I've been keeping a close eye on him for the last two weeks and he's been fine until today. Today I checked on him and found him missing his big claw. He is active and behaving normally. The other crabs in the tank all seem fine as well.

Hi,

All of your tank conditions sounds good, and the crabbies have plenty of room. I was thinking maybe the injured crab was attacked, but you said he wasn't feeling well before he lost the limb. Since you said he seems to be acting ok, I think it would be ok to leave him in the tank. He'll probably get ready to molt again (if he's strong enough) to try and regrow the limb.
