Dead crab?

Brand new to crabs. We brought 2 home from a beach shop in Florida 2 weeks ago because my kids wanted them. Once we got them home did a lot of research and got them a 50gal tank 4” of substrate 5-1 play sand to eco earth. Salt water and fresh water bowls use prime in both. Still waiting for food we ordered to come in that’s supposed to be a complete meal. In the meantime we’ve been feeding a mixture of pellets we got at the shop in Florida, Freeze dried crickets, coconut strips, pieces of banana. This morning I came out and checked the tank. And one of the crabs is laying upside down hanging out of its shell and I smelt it before I saw it. I’m pretty sure it’s dead but everything I read on Google seems to contradict the others. Just reaching out for some help and hope someone can tell me for sure.

Unfortunately, if he smells and is out of the shell, he has passed away. They go through so much and are kept in poor conditions before we get them. Sometimes they simply can't recover, no matter how perfect our set ups are. I am sorry for your loss.

Edit to add - If you are ever not sure whether a crab has passed away, you did the right thing by putting him in a container separate from other crabs. In a day or two, the smell will be the deciding factor.
