Cannabalism...

Post by Guest » Fri Oct 27, 2006 10:17 pm

One of my crabs(freshly molted) was being eaten when I peeked into my aquarium. He has only one limb left. Im pretty sure he is going to die, but I want to confirm this.

Awww I'm sorry... Is he in isolation right now? How is he doing? Are you sure HE was being eaten or was someone else snacking on his exo?

If you can provide a few more details or let us know what you'd like confirmed we can surely try. In the meantime try offering some high protein foods to your crabs like unsalted peanut butter, tuna, egg, or other meats...maybe they feel "deficient" in that area?

I hope your little guy turns out ok, and maybe he can molt again to regenerate some of what he's lost! :(

Its in ISO right now, and im sure that he was being eaten.

It now has no limbs at all, but alive. If I look into the shell, i can see it squirm around. Hopefully it can live....

*sigh* I experienced this myself and its terrible- I hope he will be ok. If its only limbs that are gone a few people have nursed limbless crabs back to life - its alot of work and patience - good luck

Good news. It has its little pincer, I think. Its still well alive, It comes out occasionally.

Does ground chuck meat have alot of protein in it? What about coconut milk?

coconut milk is great for hermies, but not much protein. Any meats will help him at this time, especially if you can puree it (make it really soft/juicy, so that he doesn't have to put much effort into eating.

It comes out of its shell and eats, although I have to put the food or water right under where his shell is.

I let him go in the main tat and the other crabs started to rough him up!

I guess im going to have to get a total isolation tank ready for him, I cant keep him in the main tat, the bottle take up too much room.
