Is this serious?

Post by dbolack » Wed Dec 06, 2006 8:58 pm

Apple's been behaving a little less than active lately.

Yesterday she went streaky. We'd seen the bit of chitin on the won side that lkooked odd and the darkspot, but didn't think it was nearly as serious as it looks. We got a couple of good shots of of the spot and we're not sure if this is a serious injury or the unfortunate effect of losing a bit of chitin.

Woah, that is really serious! :( Poor straw :(. It looks like gill damage. What are your tank conditions? Fill out the template.

I could be wrong, but I think that could be gill damage.. Or perhaps that's just the color of a Straw's gills?

I really don't know.....I'm not having a positive feeling about that coloring, my straws gill areas are a nice pretty pink.

Hi Dbolack,

Sorry to hear your straw passed away, they are such beautiful crabs :(
Looked at your picture and can see the gills exposed? Has the gill-plate peeled away from the gills?
Just asking this because two of my crabs had the exact same thing happen to them when molting, but I don't think we'd have the same cause, maybe sometimes it's just something that can happen. The first crab had one side of the gill-plate peeled right back exposing his gill parts. He died not so long after.
The second crab molted and had one side of his gill-plate peeled forward. The gill plate then started to rot away,it had black edges(although now the area's settled down). I've had a disease though that had been running through my tank ,but since then there have been two more crabs that have molted with no deformities at all fortunately.

Yes, it looked like it had, though some of it was outright missing.
