We bought 4 hermit crabs from Petco on Labor Day and as of this morning are down to 2. The crabitat is a balmy 80 degrees with humidity at about 79%, they have fresh and salt water that is changed daily, several food choices and a moss pit that they love.
I have so many questions, have I missed something essential? Is there something I am doing wrong? Or is this a common problem with store bought crabs?

Re: Store bought hermies
post purchase syndrome could be a factor. hermit crabs are plucked off of beaches, sent to a ware house( some are then taken from there shells and forced into painted ones) then they're boxed up and sent to other distributors . then sent to et store before they ever get bought. hermit crabs during this time May not be provided with proper heat/humidity/food/water. the crabs can be extremely stessed out by the time you bring it home and although you may have provided everything they need they cannot survive the whole ordeal they have been through. I'm sorry for your losses. what type of water conditioners are you using? what are you feeding them? what is your sub depth?
Re: Store bought hermies
Water conditioner is 'All Living Things' brand
sub depth about 4 1/2 inches of play sand topped with an inch of coconut fiber
Boiled eggs, apples, carrots, celery leafs and cilantro, so far.

Re: Store bought hermies
Unfortunately we usually buy all the wrong stuff also when starting out the all living things brand is inadequate. Try using a brand such as seachem prime that remove heavy metals! Id take everything 'for hermit crabs' back and demand your money back! All water must be dechlorinated with a product that removes heavy metals. Two bowls of water are required (if u didnt know) one fresh one salt. Hermit crab saltwater is also inadequate. Try using a reef grade salt such as instant ocean. These product cost the same but last muuuch longer and are beneficial!
Some cheap tips:
-Joanns sells a bag of green turbos in various sizes for 3$.
-Buy the right heat pad the first time (must be ordered) they are same price but give you better results! They are called ultra therms and can be purchased at www.reptilebasics.com
-Play sand (not calci sand) can be purchased at home depot 3$ a bag.
Hope this all helps! Good luck and welcome
