New crab owner here....couple issues/questions

Post by clowe01 » Tue Sep 20, 2016 7:07 pm

Hi everyone...new member! So glad I found this site!!
I recently purchased 2 hermit crabs and have had them for 3 weeks. They both changed shells the first day and were very active for the first few days. We could hold them and they would walk around. One of them had pinched my son 2 days in a row when he held him and then buried himself the next night. So we've determined that he's molting and have left him alone. I purchase a 10 gallon tank & set up a new tank for the other crab. (After researching more, I wasn't happy with the habitat I had originally purchased from the local pet supply store...it was a plastic thing and didn't have enough substrate)
So my second crab has been alone in the 10 gallon tank for about a week and a half. I've noticed in the past week that he is extremely inactive. Stays in hiding and isn't eating. He won't come out when I put him on my hand(which he used to do) I have smoothed the sand at night to see if there's any activity and there's none. I put out applesauce, carrots, and bloodworms for him to eat. I started to think he's just stressed and I've been leaving him alone. I'm just wondering how long can they go without eating and be ok? And how long does it typically take them to de-stress? Or do you think something else could be going on?

Also for my molting crab...He was buried for about 12 days straight but he's been moving around in the past 5. He will come to the surface, still in his shell, then dig again and then repeat the next day. Is this normal for molting crabs? I assumed they stayed buried until they were done.

My tank is 10gal, has 5 inches of substrate (sand and coco fiber), kept at 80% humidity by misting 2x daily, both fresh and salt water bowls, small heating element on the side of the tank(thinking about purchasing a light)

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Hello and welcome to the forum! Always glad to see a new face around here. :) I will start with the fact that handling hermit crabs is a highly debated subject, but as a whole we don't recommend holding them, as they are a preyed upon creature, and they see us as predators. While there are some who do handle their crabs, and there seems to be crabs that don't really mind human presence, I don't really feel like it's something they enjoy. If you do choose to handle your crabs, I strongly urge you to refrain from doing so until they make it through a successful molt as it can be stressful and hinder their recovery process. Pinching is the crabs only defense, and it may not be something that will change with the crab, try to remember these animals come from the wild, so they aren't domesticated like a dog or cat would be. From what I can tell your set up is pretty good, though make sure that sub is at least 3 times as tall as your largest crab. I also would try to find a way to supplement your humidity such as bubbler pools that doesn't require misting so much as too much water can lead to over-saturated substrate. Hermit crabs don't always dig down to molt, they also do so to destress, as well as "just for fun." I wouldn't worry too much, he will do his thing. I have crabs that spend 90 percent of their time underground. As difficult as it is just wait it out, and keep reading the subforum stickies- they have lots of lifesaving and informative info. I also wanted to touch on post-purchase syndrome, which is basically when a new crab falls ill for seemingly no cause. There is a sticky about it under health and breeding that elaborates, but I think that this is likely the case. Just keep conditions good, and maybe offer some non filtered honey as it has natural antibiotic properties that are good for healing. These little guys go through a lot and the learning curve is steep. I hope this helps! :)

Thank you so much! It's amazing how much info is out there that is inaccurate. I have read on a couple other sites that it was good to handle the crabs and play with them. I really hope I'm not dealing with PPS. I will make all the changes that you suggested and update in a couple weeks.

I had to share a quick update....the crab that I thought to be molting (now I think was stressed) and was in a separate tank has surfaced. He's been active and moving around so I put him into my 10 gal habitat with my inactive crab. They both have been more active and more present and hanging out of their shell (not completely of course). I'm feeling like my inactive crab was actually loney...I will continue to monitor, but in the couple hours since they've been reunited, I'm feeling positive about the situation.

I just wanted to clarify that crabs don't have to be isoed unless there is a molting emergency or major aggression going on. (trying to rip each other out of shells) Normal molts can take place in the tank. Try not to worry too much about them being inactive, as they are nocturnal and sleep most of the day. (Mine are most active between 11-7 am.) They will appear "dormant" while they rest. I also wanted to mention after rereading your post to make sure that the applesauce you are feeding has no added sugars or preservatives. I'm also going to link you to the basic care guide just in case you haven't had a chance to read through it yet. viewtopic.php?f=51&t=92457
I also suggest checking out many of the other "stickies" in each section as they contain very good information that can really help you as a crabber. :) I am glad to hear your little ones are doing well though, keep up the good work!

Thank you again!! I should clarify that the one that I thought was molting was still in my original plastic tank so I left him there because I thought he was indeed molting. I'm still not sure if he did molt...It appears that he just loves to dig now that he's in the newer 10gal aquarium. He also switched shells last night.

My inactive guy was in the food bowl this morning!!! Hopefully eating the raw organic honey and getting his strength up. And I'm big on organic foods for my kiddos so the applesauce is organic and no sugar added ;)

Sounds good! I figured that was the case, but I wanted to be sure. :) Glad he's enjoying the yummies!
