New to crabs and new in the neighborhood
New to crabs and new in the neighborhood
Hello! Just wanted to stop in and say hi. I've lurked the forums for awhile now, doing research for this new crabby adventure I've gotten myself into. Just registered this morning. I'm the mom to four purple pitchers and learning more all the time. I've had them almost five months and have had one successful molt and one on its way. It's been exciting, all the newbies have been called fashion divas. They all seem to love switching shells. My daughters have named them CrabbiePattie, Sheldon, Crabitha and Coconut. I do hope they find one that satisfies them but until then, it's fun to watch. We started with a 10 gallon tank and now have a 25gal with a ten stacked on top and a separate 10 gal for molting. I hope to adopt more crabs one day. I'd love to have more but can not stand to think of the conditions they went to to get to my pet store or the tourist trap I bought them from. Thank you for this informative forum!!

Hello, and welcome to the HCA! I am glad you are no longer a lurker! I'm loving the name Crabitha- very original.
It's always nice to add new crabbers to our ranks!
I know you have probably already seen it, but I'm going to go ahead and link our basic care guides as it's a great reference point. viewtopic.php?f=51&t=92457 Just a tip, if you have proper substrate ( 3 times deeper than the largest crab) you don't have to isolate molters, they can dig down in the main tank and molt there.
Happy Crabbing, I'm looking forward to seeing pics of that lovely sounding set-up when you have the chance!

This is a poor photo of my set up. I'm going to insulate both ranks tonight. Been reading in the heat forums. The top tank is secured but I'm cutting a log to put under it for more support. I also need to get sand for the top tank. I'd like to put real plants up there but don't know if I'm ready for that. Lol

You have some really nice decor there, it's super pretty! I will caution though with the gaps in your top though as crabs can be little escape artists, and too much of one will let all your humidity out. Perhaps some saran wrap to discourage too much adventure? lol I also notice that your sub is slanted, just make sure that it's at least 3 times as deep as your largest crab throughout the tank. I know that it looks better to us with a varied terrain, but slanted sub makes it easier for digging crabs to run into molters if they don't decide to bury on the "deep" side of the tank if that makes sense. Like I mentioned before you should only have to iso crabs if there is an emergency such as a tank flood, aggression, or injury. If provided with proper sub they can just do their thing and molt in their tank. I'm loving the big cholla log!

Thank you
they have escaped before but not from this set up. It's my bad attempt to cut plexiglass. I hope to fix it this week because I am worried about the humidity. I probably haven't gotten it right. Just got my humidity gage. I'm just working on solving the puzzle of having that top tank as a neat adventure spot but still being able to access it to clean and add water etc.

Home depot and lowes will cut plexiglass for you if you ask. You could turn the other tank upside down, and sillicone climbing stuff up in there and let it dry, and then get a sheet of plexiglass cut to the length of your tank minus the space for the topper so the other tank could be upside down over the opening. Many use velcro to attatch the topper in place so it's removable, yet still usable. I hope that makes sense. I've never done so myself, but I've always liked the idea of a topper.
