Re: What to do...
Have you looked on craigslist for another tank? I've been browsing tanks on there for a week and most are $1 per gallon and some are less than that.
Some people also use giant rubbermaid plastic storage totes from walmart as a space saving crabitat (check the forums.) These are also easy to move from place to place until you can get a proper glass tank. Its definitely better than a critter keeper or the woods.

There is no room in this house for any bigger of a tank than my 20g tall.Krist0ph wrote:Have you looked on craigslist for another tank? I've been browsing tanks on there for a week and most are $1 per gallon and some are less than that.

Put 4 in the 20 gallon, and put the 3 smallest in the 10. If they are really small they should be okay in there for a little while. I'll be honest though, they do grow pretty fast with good conditions, mine are much larger than they where a year ago. That being said: You might be looking at a new tank/ tote in less than a year, I think you'll find there won't be a choice if you decide to keep them. You might consider fostering them and trying to find them a home yourself here on the HCA page.
While crowded, if you keep the sub depth good, and you don't add any more crabs you can probably get away with it temporarily, purple pinchers do better more crowded than other species. Just be extra sure to provide lots of hides, and climbing places so each crab can have it's own "spot." In any case, they are better off with you than freezing to death. Make sure to dip each crab in the fw bowl upon introduction to make them "smell" the same. There is no easy answer, I do think if you can find space for a tote that would be your best bet. Thank you for caring about the lil guys!

I'll keep everyone updated who wants updated thru this post. I'm going to hook up with them either tomorrow or Saturday, fostering is a good idea if nothing else

Re: What to do...
So I never ended up hearing from these people after this, and completely lost the thought in my crowded head. Until tonight, when my friend called me again. The people had decided to keep them, but again changed their minds and want me to take them. I am really going to have to, but with the weather now so cold and my issues with moist sub, I don't feel comfortable putting any of them in the 5g. I guess I have to order a new therm/hygro since the company I ordered one from says it's last in the mail, so I don't know the exacts in my 20t but it's very very warm when I change food and water and mist. With Christmas around the corner I cannot afford to buy the necessary things to fix the 5g until after the holidays. Do you guys think they will be ok in the 20g with all 5 of our crabs in there now that Athena is in there?

Re: What to do...
Could you maybe try a plastic storage tote for the new guys?

I wouldn't risk adding any more crabs to your 20 gallon. I know they need a home, but adding more crabs will put you at serious risks for disturbed molters. The more crabs we add to a tank, the more likely they are to run into each other underground. :/
